bookshelf speaker for PC

The Infinity Primus bookshelf speakers, by far, have superior performance in the mid-range/treble as compared to any other speaker(s) any where near the selling price, of which I am aware. 3rd party measurements have verified this as the situation. The current selling price for the Primus speakers is amazingly low. $40-60 each for the Primus 150 if you look in the right place at the right time.

Just to let you guys know, I will have a pair of 150s this wednesday at my house, and I will be comparing them to my Energy C-1s. Not blind, nothing special, but I will try to be as honest as possible (even if it means slamming my own gear).

BTW, The Athena review is nearly complete.

Take note that the Primus 150 has rapid roll off below 80Hz, and there for it must be used with a subwoofer, crossed at least 80Hz(optimally 100Hz, 4th order or higher), if the sound is not to be judged as 'thin', subjectively.

sheep, based on the pics on the polk website ... it looked like the monitor looked better. :)

make sure to post early conclusions before typing up your whole review

Why? This review won't be as large as my subwoofer reviews.

WmAx,

I will be using it with a subwoofer, and without, and the crossover point will be 90Hz(no choice).

well I ordered the Rti4 and will probably get it within the week (against what my eyes want ... note: I ordered without hearing any of them)

I have two connection options ...

option 1: running the Rti4 full range + sub (speakers connected via speaker level on "speaker A" subwoofer connected to "speaker b")

or

option 2: running the Rti4 with the sub's 80hz crossover (speaker level from amp to sub then sub to speaker)

which is better?
cons:
option 1: I lose bass management - letting the bookshelf roll off by itself
option 2: isnt the high pass crossover of 80hz a bit high? (wish it was variable just like the low pass crossover)

will be using the Velo CHT-15R btw.

PM Buckeyefan 1 He has the RTi4's so he might know what a good Xover is for them.

it is chris ... it does need a sub for heavy bass songs but for ordinary computer use, maybe even games ... it does pretty well.

it of course mops the floor with the PC speakers and even the JBL satellites I tried. cocking the gun in counter strike never sounded so detailed :)

I've moved one of my subs to PC duty ... the rti's are doing full range, the sub is doing 60hz down.

Wow Mike, when you do an upgrade you don't mess around!

I thought you were going to use an older receiver? Is that a HK 330?

my old receiver is in my bedroom, this one is a stereo receiver HK3480.
I don't have any money left to buy something to put there (had to open up that - from the pipe in music project) the kenwood I was talking about had pretty horrible specs. i found on the manual a wider freq. range and a low THD but it was only rated at 20w.

still trying to decide buying another HK unit like that or a rotel RA-04/05 or a yamaha 659 (yes, HT receiver for 2 channel) - but this will be when I get back from my honeymoon.

i'm considering the 659 because my sound card has optical outs, the yammy has variable crossover, and kinda looking at either the surround or presence capability :)

escalation thing, first option was a 3480 and is about 300 bucks ... but the rotel is only 380 ... but the yammy is only 550. im going crazy.

I like listening to my LCD monitor and staring at my speakers :)

seriously, I tried all my bass (rap) songs first ... it really does need a subwoofer. but when I tried the "normal" ballads, pop songs ... it did pretty good on its own. I couldnt stand the lack of bass and promptly moved my velo sub to accompany it. first, the sub was localizable, but then I remembered that the velo crossover was set to "direct" - I first dropped it down to 80hz ... but still felt a little localizable, tried 70 then 60 where its stayed right now. its very hard to do a review because I've never had bookshelf fronts. and I've never really listened to speakers this close before.

but what I can say is that the detail is pretty good - good mids too. if this is called bright, I like bright.

oh and I also want to correct that there is only one rear port ... the power port. (really designed for wall mounting because it points everywhere but the back - kinda like a yammy subs pyramid plate at the bottom) the rti 6 had both a power port and a regular port at the back.

to be continued ...

So what is the hole on the front for...?

I just got the 150s set up. Not bad, but no Energy killers... more to come.

its another port :) polk doesnt have a speaker diagram on their website of the rti bookshelves, only the rti floorstanders. but it looks like polk likes the use of front and back ports. (sometimes pointing at each other inside)

but I like the small front port on this one. check the primus 150 port ... you can fit a lot of things in there. american pie? j/k
