it doesnt have to be old for krell not to have HDMI only their current evo series have that and its 30k. the moderate(7k) still does not have hdmi and is only just now being replaced with one that does. so mine is not all that old. :)

Anyway so for movies its best for me to use the analog outs from the blu ray(sony bdp s550) to the pre/pro

on a side note and I think I might have kid napped this thread I have been thinking about the oppo bdp 83 woudl that be a huge step up from the sony?

if i sell the marants dv6600 that i'm using now for music(s ch) and just do the analog out for the movies and the digital out on the oppo for music be a winning single combo?

Any surround processor/preamp/receiver that lacks HDMI is out of date, regardless of whether the manufacturer of a brand can sucker people into buying something without it or not. Very often, expensive processors tend to be behind the times a bit, as they are not typically replaced with new models as often as receivers from popular brands. The Krell HTS 7.1 was being made at least as far back as 2002 (search for reviews and you will see), so it is out of date now. Surround processors are somewhat like computers; they are not generally good long term investments, as a new and better one will be available in the not too distant future.

Just to be clear: By saying your preamp is out of date, I do NOT mean that you should replace it. You can use it for great sound still. But I would not recommend buying it today.

Yes. Use the multichannel analog outputs on the Sony.

I doubt it. To know absolutely, level matched, double blind listening tests would need to be done, and I doubt anyone is going to do that. I recommend that you enjoy your Sony and not bother, unless you decide you need some feature that your Sony lacks.

You could do that if you wanted. But why not just use the digital out on the Marantz you have instead of buying something new?

Judging from the fact that you have a Krell preamp, saving money is not likely to be a top priority for you, but what you have now should work fine for what you have said you want to do.

Of course, if you are wanting to play multichannel SACDs and DVD-Audio as well, then you might find it convenient to buy the Oppo BDP-83 and get rid of your Marantz and Sony, as I believe your Krell has only one multichannel analog input. Obviously, before parting with your money, you will want to double check that.

without making this thread about how good krell is or how outdated it may or may not be.. (we could argue that for a while)

I do welcome the alternate connection possibility, and will try it out and see if I like it better than the digital. The krell has more than enough inputs for any possiblity.

I'm not a guy who doesnt care about money I bought all my stuff used and with careful thought about what I wanted and why. Its a combination of value and performance not to mention resale value for that later upgrade :)

"Out of date" does not mean low quality. I am not criticizing the quality of your Krell at all. I tried to make that clear with my comment above:

I would be very surprised if it did not sound great. But the simple fact is, it does not do things that one could reasonably want a processor to do today involving BD. That is what I mean by saying it is "out of date".

How much difference it makes will depend upon the particular BD disc that you play. The soundtrack on a BD can be one of the older "lossy" formats, and for those, it will not help.

Given the reputation of Krell, I am sure you will be able to find a buyer if you should decide to sell it at some point (again, I am not recommending that you sell it). But the lack of the new formats will impact resale value, even though it is possible to work around this by using the multichannel analog inputs.
