Blu-ray taking off faster than expected

I've been renting from Hollywood for some time now, unfortunately, their selection is small and I've pretty much seen or own everything they have (I think I own more discs than they do). They always ask if I have a BD player too - which is a good thing - but it does indicate to me that they have had people rent them and not have a BD player.
Hollywood charges like $7/rental. I remember buying HD DVD's from them for $10 when they went under. Most used Blu-ray discs are available for around $15 on E-bay. Living in the Bay Area, Netflix should be almost instant for you. (Here in TX, I've found very few waits with Blockbuster Online. Netflix is another matter.)

Honestly, I don't really know what you are talking about... My panny boots up plenty fast for me. I rarely have a disc picked out before its ready. Or by the time I can turn off all the lights. Well, its way faster than my Tosh HD-A35 in any case.

I still have no idea what I'll miss out with 2.0. I never watch commentary. I have a growing collection, and I never have watched commentary (or is that what 2.0 is even for??).
To me loading time is more important than booting time. All of my displays are kept in low power mode. I'm not cheap. I'm just semi-green. I can wait an extra 95 seconds for my TV to turn on. My player will be power up faster than my display. I then have to wait another 3 seconds for HDMI to sync.

According to Cnet, the fastest two loading standalones are the (not yet out) Panny DMP-BD50 and the (surprise) LG BH200. The LG at least has the excuse of being bogged down by having to read defunct HD DVD discs. Pioneer, Denon, Samsung, Philips, Sony, Sharp and others don't have that excuse. (Mitsubishi, Hitachi, JVC, Yamaha and Oppo at least have the decency to stay on the sidelines here in the US for now.)

These speeds were all significantly faster than the Samsung BD-P1500, and among all of the standalone players we've tested, only the LG BH200 loaded discs as quickly as the DMP-BD50. Of course, the PS3 is still the speed champ, and we're constantly frustrated by how unresponsive standalone players feel in comparison.
Profile 1.1 is for PiP commentary, etc. Profile 2.0 is completely different. That's for Internet connectivity. (way cooler with much more potential than PiP IMHO) Too bad you didn't utilize some of the neater features like community screenings and chat on your HD DVD player. Some people think it's just a spam port for trailers and sales. Err... The spam port is Disney preventing you from easily skipping their old *** trailers on Blu-Ray discs.

Load time is probably faster than boot time on my panny. Though I don't think I ever timed it. My only point was that it's not THAT long where it is a "problem". No, its not as fast as a dvd player.. but, well, for real world usage at my place, its quite fast enough for me.

I couldn't care less for community screenings and chat, even if I knew what the first even was... heh. I have no tv programming or video game system either. Purely movies for now.

I don't think I've ever used PiP once in my entire life. Don't care. But, I guess its nice for others.

I picked my players solely on video/audio movie playback for hi-def formats. Not that people care anymore, but the HD-A35 is definitely much more prone to audio drop/sync issue (especially if left on pause for a good while) than the bdp (only once).

All my Tosh HD DVD players were 2nd gen. The only issue I ever had with my A20 was its crap de-interlacing. Most of the Blu-Ray standalones (including your Panny) have this issue, too. Sorry to read about your drop/sync issues w/ your A35.

Anyhoo, glad to read that Blu is doing better. It's traditionally one to two years behind HD DVD. So, if it makes it past 2010, then it should be alright.

I still don't own a blu ray player yet and I am gonna pull the trigger in the beginning of August. I guess the PS3 is the way to go from what I hear. I would like to get update on when the oppo blu-ray is going to come out.

I too am awaiting to see what Oppo comes out with regarding BR. My guess it will be something very special as well as being more affordable. Any member here know of when Oppo plans to release thier 1st BR player? I have NOT been able to find much at all.

Cheers,

Phil

Oppo themselves have been very quiet about it. When I e-mailed them and asked them directly (this was before HD DVD conceded defeat), their reply was that they weren't interested yet; their interest was making "a mature product better". Meaning improving DVD players.

Around the net, however, I've been reading that Oppo will make an announcement this summer regarding a Blu-ray player coming out either later this year or early next year. That's the most I've heard.

And that's the Blu-ray player I'll likely get. I'm sure that Oppo's player will feature the things I'm looking for: 7.1 (or even 5.1) analog audio output, SACD, DVD-A and DivX playback, and Profile 2.0.

cheers,

Yea, the Panny does not have the best dvd playback. Fortunately, I jumped into AV very, very late, and I never had many dvd's to begin with anyways. My hi-def collection already is greater than my dvd collection. (I think I've surpassed 100, but dvd collection is less than 50, all of them used).

The hd-dvd sync isn't that bad really. When it happens, its almost always because it was left on pause for a while. All I do is skip back a track, and the issue is taken care of.

re Oppo players, I was interested too. I think that some think they won't be cheap, but of course they expect good value as they are known for. Some think they will be pricey. I think they won't be any less expensive than other players that exist at the time of release. Especially considering that their latest dvd player costs $400...

I am going to drop by Oppo today to pick up a 980 for my dad. I will ask them if they have anything to say about their Blu-ray plans.

D'oh! I got over there only to find that they had MOVED....Will get over there today at lunch. Maybe they could have made that a little more obvious on their website or mentioned it when I called them; oh well, my fault for not checking.

Picked up another 980 from them at lunch today at their new location. Nicer location, right by the wetlands. I asked the guy if they would be putting out a blu-ray player and while he offered no details on when, how much or any specs, he said YES the plan is to produce one. It is apparently still in the design stage, so he doesn't really have info to report (not that he would...).

Wetlands? Alviso wetlands? N/m, just checked Oppo Digital, they're in Mtn View. Good times near the Shoreline...memories...

Anyhoo, hopefully Oppo will resist the urge to be greedy double-dippers like Denon, Onkyo and Pioneer and release a 2.0 player from the start.

Yeah, they are on the 101 side of the wetlands that also border Alviso (237) - right near the edge of Shoreline park.
