Blizzard for Minnesota this Weekend!

So Minnesota is under a blizzard warning from now until late tomorrow night and possibly into Monday.

We are on tap for 13 to 21 inches of snow. State of emergency has been declared and most roads may be closed in Minnesota. Power line crews have been positions as power interruptions are likely. We had quite a few yesterday in the high winds.

The snow is light right now, but with heavier bursts. Wind is currently very light, so no blizzard yet. The temperature has dropped to 31F. The snow is heavy enough to have turned the ground and roofs white.

A state of emergency has been declared.

This area is renowned for these March storms on occasions. The radar shows a huge storm stretching to here from the West Coast and up into Canada.

So, the next 36 hours will be interesting to say the least. I hope my 45 year old JD 214 will be up to the task. If the forecast is correct, it may be one of the biggest, or bigger than any other snowfall I have had to clear with it.

Bugger that, Your welcome to my share of that

If the temperatures drop below 20 degrees celsius [ 68 F ] we light the fire, or move further north
Average temperatures this time of year is around 28 -- 35 c [ 82 -- 95 F ]

Wow. Currently in Mexico on vacation. Flying in on Monday afternoon. Hopefully they have dealt with the roads, as the trip home from Mpls is a couple hours without dealing with winter roads.
I should just stay here.

It is snowing and blowing hard at the moment and this is at the beginning. As far as I can tell all flight operations are cancelled across seven states at the moment, including Minnesota.

According to current forecasts this thing won't be winding down until Monday morning. We are early in this, and I will keep you posted.

We live very close to MSP, and if you need assistance on arrival, let me know.

It may take some time before the roads open, but ploughs and electric line personnel have been positioned around the state. No travel is advised in the southern half of Minnesota already. You can see that many roads you should not attempt to be out on now.

I will post tomorrow. We have been advised to blow snow tomorrow as it may be too deep to blow by Monday.

I hope I don't have to blow in the storm. I hate that.

I am going to miss the old JD Model A I had at our lake home. Although I have blown some deep heavy snows over the years with the 36" blower on the 214. But that, like me, is not as young as it used to be.

We will stay in touch and my wife and I will assist in any way we can.

Today, on the WI/IL border, it is still raining. We are supposed to get some snow overnight, but not like northern 1/2 of WI. The snow blower is waiting for my son. lol

So far, I have been out shoveling twice. The street plows had, as usual pushed a huge mound at the foot of my driveway but my AWD Dodge Journey had no issue with that. I have zero concerns about getting around for my route tomorrow with that vehicle. Wednesday, it'll be upper 30's and in the low 50's by Friday. I used to deliver in St. Paul and West St. Paul where they are just terrible at plowing. The roads are always a mess there for weeks on end after a snow storm.

Weather service keeps reporting light snow. It is light if you can't see 0.5 Km, by their definition. Well I can tell you it is heavy here in Eagan, as there are huge flakes coming down fast. As of 11.00 AM the weather service says we have had 10" of snow. However, there has been steady large flakes coming down fast since then. I would say an inch plus an hour at least. So I would say we have at least 14" on the ground now.

I watch the couple next door, who are young. They have a top end Toro electric blower, but it can't move this and just plugs. The snow is very wet, dripping wet in fact. So, it is going to be very hard to move. I have a feeling my JD 214 will be no match for it. So, I will likely have to call a commercial outfit, if I can.

MSP says 73% of flights are cancelled in and out. I have not heard a plane all day.

Meanwhile the snow is falling hard in very large flakes, with a moderate wind pushing it.

Mark, I must say thank you very much for offering to assist my family and I. IMO, you definitely have enough on your plate to worry about. I believe we will be ok as I have a capable vehicle, good tires and much experience.
Again, thank you, and good luck with your procedure. I hope you find success.

I think that unfortunately you are more likely than not to have chaos with your flights. Hardly any flight have left and arrived at Minneapolis today. I would anticipate severe disruption in your flight plans as the chaos is ongoing as the storm moves south and east. There will be a lot of planes in the wrong place.

If you arrive late and tired let me know and we will assist you. With the way things are this would not be a good time to drive late at night in the next day or two. I think that there will severe disruption until Thursday.

10 inches is about what I got. Looks by Friday it might all have melted.

Where do you live Dude? I am in Apple Valley. I drove the speed limit since 5:30 this morning to Bloomington then Cottage Grove and now I'm in Hastings and it's only 7:30. Mndot does a beautiful job on the roads.

Did they plow yet? ;)
They did the third plowing on our circle this morning. It now looks good.

I blew out enough to get one of our cars out yesterday. I while try and get the rest today, as it is tough going.
The snow id very wet. I only plugged the blower attachment once. I thought it would be worse. The neighbor's blowers kept plugging, so they had to do most of it by hand. I used less then half the width of the blower, so blew just over a foot at a time. That did not bog the engine down. Snow was some of the wettest and I have encountered heaviest. So hopefully by noon we can get two cars out.

We seem to have a larger Minnesota membership, that I thought. We should get together.

If you speak with them, maybe you could recommend Silicone spray for the chute- I use that or PB Blaster garage door lubricant.

I'm two miles from Lake Michigan- it's not uncommon for the snow to fall overnight before the cold really sets in or later in Winter, when the ground has been warm, then snow falls and becomes wet at the bottom with a mashed potato consistency. My two stage blower doesn't do well with it and the chute clogs, but as you did- only cutting about a foot wide helps a lot. The single stage blower is good to about 12" deep, but not if it's all wet, packing snow.

My favorite thing is when things are going well and then, it just doesn't want to move the still-falling snow when the temperature is near freezing and the wind is from anywhere between S to SW. I wear a hat or hood and after sunset, I want to get a start on the snow when it's suposed to end soon. I have looked up and realized that the snow had changed to light rain. Good times!

We get Lake Effect snow, but not the way Western Michigan is pounded.
