Surprise your dad and tell him the truth ! His reaction may surprise you.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that you're a teenager. I am the father of some former teenagers. My youngest is now 23. Nothing makes a dad more furious than to be deceived. The best thing you can do is to go honest early. Tell him about the tweeter. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take his multimeter without telling him first. If you tell him about the tweeter first, he may suggest using that multimeter. Then it will be his idea.

Most tweeters are cheap. I bet a replacement from JBL would cost no more than $20. With a warranty it will be free.

An easy way to tell if one tweeter is blown without using a multimeter, is to remove the bad tweeter and replace it with your other good tweeter. Did you blow both? It it works, then the other tweeter was blown and the crossover is fine.

I got 10 bucks saying your Dad has blown at least one speaker in his life; tell him about it and I bet everything will be fine.

If this constitutes a "crisis" we have a real problem with perspective in America today... lol.
I hope thats not an insult.

Well it wasnt a crisis till now...Lol

SO... ive been trying to get a hold of someone from "Erickson Consumer" the company that JBL is with in Canada for the past 3-4 days. They are the ONLY people who can help me with parts or warranty but too bad they are some stupid crappy company with really horrible....no wait...change that to unbelievably, horrifically inferior customer service. It is seriously the WORST service i have ever came across in my life for the following reasons.

1. You have to call them 500 times to get a hold of someone.
2. The someone you do get a hold of finally speaks french and not english??
3. All of the menu's and self serve stuff if is in french and you have to wait an hour for the stupid machine to shut its pie-hole so you can finally hear the english message.
4. SO then, you get a hold of someone that speaks english but they forward you to someone else because apparently they cant help you.
5. The person that you get forwarded to doesnt speak english properly so we are back to step 2.
6. They forward you to someone else that does speak english but they tell you to go take it to a stereo repair shop (WTF, im under warranty moron gimme the part)
7. The guy finally understands that you need a part, not the number to some corner stereo repair shop so he forwards you to the parts department.
8. Back to step 2 AGAIN and the french guy transfers you to the english part dude and HE doesn't pick up his phone.
9. You leave a message saying to call you back, then you storm off and throw the phone at the wall and rip out your hair.
10. Right when you are in the bathroom, they phone back and leave you a message, when you go to check it, its some guy who obviously got his voice box taken out or he was dropped on the head as a child because he sounds like he is drunk and high at the same time and you cant make out a single WORD of what he is saying.
11. You call again and deal with step 1,2 and 3 again, then things go a bit better and you get forwarded to the right guy quicker than last time but oh wait, he is too busy painting his toenails red so he doesnt pick up the damn phone!!!!
12. You call the U.S number back to complain but they don't care cuz ur canadian so "they cant help you"

I am seriously going to have a stroke but GOD did typing that all out make me feel better, at least its out of my system....

I expected a bit better service than this.

Well lets just hope that the problem gets solved so i wont have to buy new speakers. if i have no other choice left then i guess i will need to get some new ones.... i just dont know, i cant really even afford much right now considering the fact that i just bought a brand new car, a new laptop and a bunch of crap for my home studio. I am using my savings up pretty fast. The fact is that just because i have the money does not mean i should give up and waste it.

Oh. and just a question for everyone here.

What can I do to make sure i dont spike my tweeter again. Lets let this be a learning experience. I have made up my mind that it resulted from a clipped signal, what can i make sure it doesnt happen again.

Blown tweeter prevention 101:

1.) Be sure when connect new components that none of them are plugged in, or at the very least make sure they are off (this applies particularly to power amplifiers).

2.) Check and double check you connections before turning anything on

3.) When you power up with a new component added be sure that you can quickly (matter of less than a second) shut off power to the speakers if distorted output occurs. I had this happen with my Infinity IL 10 speakers with an improperly connected set-up, the tweeters blew and I had to replace them.

4.) When listening to music at any volume and the tweeters become noticeably shrill or dramatically harsh turn down the volume immediately or shut the system off entirely. If a speaker is exhibiting this behavior it may not be the speaker's fault, but rather poor or inadequate amplification. The sound signature of clipping is obvious in most cases and you should be able to tell when the speakers or the amp are being pushed too hard.

5.) Be very cautious playing loud music when you are away from the room. If you are playing unfamiliar material at higher than normal output you may risk damaging your speakers. Know your equipment's boundaries and know your music.

6.) If you start shopping for speakers again try to find a higher quality speaker. The tweeters in the JBL Venue speakers are nothing amazing, they are rather small and fragile. Some speakers from long ago had fuses to protect the tweeters, and I would suppose you could have some in-line fuses for your speakers if you could properly evaluate what fuse should be used. I am not picking on your speakers, but I am sure you understand the concept "you get what you pay for". Paradigm, PSB, Energy and many other Canadian speaker companies offer much better alternatives to the JBL Venue series, but they will cost you more.:(

I will take that into considderation when i buy speakers again. I thought that the northridge speakers were pretty good though considdering the fact that all of the northridge series, even the e-80's use the same tweeters so i didnt think it would be a problem but you are right, you get what you pay for. they were pretty cheap (250 dollars) but they seemed to perform very well. The sound that i played through the system was really harsh though and the reason it occured was because i had downloaded it and put it in my playlist and left the system cranked up while i was in the kitchen. I wont be doing that again. Thanks for the advice.

Also, to keep everyone posted on the situation, I sent a letter to JBL complaining about their customer service. I made it respectful but it is amazing what i can do with words without being foul. I seem to have that talent... I will call Erikson Consumer again tomorrow and i will wait for a reply to my letter from JBL.

John

P.S. Why does my little tag line thingy show up as `Member` with all of the audio alchemists around me, i definatly feel special now.. god. member...pfft. lol

Seriously, I have no life.
I can borrow my dad's 150 dollar multimeter (he is crazy). Thanks..

John
Would that be because he has a $150 meter? If you, you will find out in time that it might have been a great investment as it may be able to measure AC frequency voltages beyond 60Hz, measure current so you know how much power your computer is drawing when it is left on and not used for hours and hours, measure resistance, DC voltage and probably a few other useful things. Now, he doesn't have to buy another meter and it will last a long time.:D
So, I bet he is not crazy;)

Yeah, its a pretty nifty meter. The company is Fluke and he seems to like it a lot. he needed a good meter because he has a hobby of bulding and flying 1/4 scale R/C airplanes and the new high end thing is to use electric instead of gas and he needs to keep track of the performance of his gigantic expensive lithium polymer batteries. lol. again, he is crazy.
