I have not seen confirmation of doppler distortion. But it's easy to see how it can be assumed to be such. Rod Elliot, commendably, tested this claim and found some interesting results. Certainly, an undesirable distortion does arise when the cone movement exceeds a specific fraction of a wavelength, but it's not doppler distortion....

BTW, it does not matter if a speaker reproduces 20-20,000Hz or 5000-20000Hz, so long as the movement/distance is small in relation to the wavelengths reproduced. Otherwise, a high quality headphone could never sound as pristine/clear as they do; afterall, they are technically full range speakers. :)

Yes, IM distortion in the speaker IS the problem. This was well demonstrated when the researchers debunked the audibility of ultrasonic frequencies. It wasn't the 20kHz+ that was heard but the IM created by them. It disappeared when a number of drivers were used that were limited in their response band that eliminated the IM components :D

The best way to hear the doppler effecct is...

...when a siren is traversing your line of sight at a fairly high rate of speed. As it approaches, it's a little higher in pitch than it is going away from you.

I only threw that in to muddy the water  and point out that IM distortion is speakers ia much, much more of an issue than IM distortion is wires and cables. Can you say "red herring", kiddies?

Well, golly gee...

...mtry, markw and WmAx...it's like deja vu all over again...Hello, and how is everyone?...

Mtry, I tend to agree, but as they say in the Smith Defensive Driving course "Always leave an out"...a pox upon me for being a wishy-washy little snot...

Sorry to bring this up, but has anyone had ANY contact with woodman? There is some conjecture he may no longer be with us...

Hello to you too RL. It's good to see you here. Because you mentioned it, I looked woodman up at the old place and he hasn't posted there since January. His sign-off motto was "I plan to live forever . . . so far so good." I hope that still applies.

As do I...I prefer to think the current regime over there just p!$$ed him off to the point of not wanting to post there any longer...

You should just adopt this place as your home too :D

Hope woodman is ok too but he was getting up in years ;)

Hi, Resident Loser. Nice to see you. Mtrycrafts is right: you should adopt this place as your home. Besides, Audioreview.com sucks, or at least it has, since the new administration took charge.
