Best way to hook up a PS3?

Picked up a ps3 tonight. Was reading online about some people were able to hook it up via HDMI and Optical, but it required powering the tv, ps3, and receiver on in a specific order. Is there a way to hook it up this way without playing simon says?

Currently, my xbox360 is hooked up to my only HDMI input on the TV. I can move it to component. My receiver doesn't have HDMI, but does have plentiful optical inputs.

Suggestions?

I have mine connected to my TV via HDMI for video and to my receiver via optical for sound and have no issues whatsoever as long as I switch my receiver to the PS3's input before powering on the PS3. That is the only issue I've ever had with it ever.

It shouldn't make any difference. I turn mine on in random orders and it always works fine.

Yep. My receiver doesn't have HDMI, so I have no choice but to use optical for now.
Thanks. I'll have to try that. HDMI is a PITA in that even if you go HDMI to the TV and optical out from the TV to the receiver, it only transmits in 2-channel sound out of the optical connection even though it's getting 7 channels in. DRM sucks.

If you mean you are sending lossless PCM tracks to the TV and the TV is only sending 2ch to the receiver, that is working correctly. The same thing will happen via optical direct from the PS3 to the receiver because this type of lossless track cannot be passed via optical. Do you get stereo with ALL types of audio or only lossless?

Are you sure about this? I have my ps3 running optical directly to my STR-dg800 and I can playback PCM tracks...unless they're being downconverted or something. Do you know more about this?

Wait a minute, your Xbox 360 is hooked up to your tv via HDMI? Do you have an elite xbox 360?

I tried the LPCM tracks and all I get is stereo via optical to the receiver. HDMI should pass the LPCM just fine since you are going direct to the receiver, but he is saying he is going to the TV first, then to the receiver via optical from the TV.

All games. They're encoded for surround sound, but because of my setup, i'm only getting two channel the way it is now.

Yes i have an elite. I took the HDMI cable off it though, since Sony doesn't include any cables with the PS3. So now the PS3 -> TV via HDMI and i'm using component for the 360. It is funny seeing "Microsoft" on the HDMi cable connected to the PS3 though ;) Then the TV is going to the receiver via optical.

So i'll try PS3->TV (HDMI) and PS3->Receiver (optical).

Maybe i should just upgrade my receiver and go all HDMI.

Set optical to bitstream and connect the optical direct to the receiver and that should be fixed :) I am waiting for Marantz to release their new receivers so I can get one with HDMI.

Thanks.

I was an idiot when i bought my TV and receiver. Me: "How could i possibly need more than one HDMI input on the TV? The only foreseeable use is Blu-ray or HD-DVD".

Now i have 3 components that can feed HDMI (ps3, 360, DVD), a tv with one input, a receiver with none, and a wife that wants to kill me :)
