Large Advents circa 1973

not in the running now certainly, but the best at the time compared with the poor stuff most called stereos....had tight bass, clean high end and all in a small box....a miracle at the time.....

I just heard a system with the new Mark levinson 502 Media Center, 532 stereo amp and Revel Salon 2s and I think you would be hard pressed to beat that for the money and possibly quite a bit more.

I haven't heard much but of the speakers I have heard the B&W 802Ds were excellent. I found the B&W CM9 to be a close second but again, my auditions have been very limited.

It is very hard to say what was best, as I have heard speakers many years apart, in different rooms, with different music. The best that I am confident are great (because I listen to them with some frequency) are Apogee Stage speakers; you can read some reviews:

http://www.apogeespeakers.com/reviews/stage_audiophile_july1990.htm

http://www.apogeespeakers.com/reviews/stage_stereophile_review.htm

http://www.apogeespeakers.com/reviews/stage_hifinews_march1990.htm

I remember liking some Carver speakers with long ribbon drivers that covered the midrange and treble and used a cone woofer that, on first impression, sounded great, but I would need to hear them again to judge them properly.

I would also like to hear some upper model Apogee speakers, but not if they were not for sale at a reasonable price, unless I didn't like them. ;)

If I were going to run out and quickly buy some new speakers, I would look to Magnepan.

As you might surmise from my examples, I rather like ribbon speakers.

My vote would be for the Dalquist DQ-10s from the very early 80s or the 70s Klipschorn. These two sounded awesome to me.
My Dad had early 1970's Klipschorns with a McIntosh tube amps in a 25X25 foot room...WOW .... too bad he moved to a smaller home after I moved out and he sold them:( and I helped him bring home the Cornwalls new that I have now.

I did not realize that this thread is from 2006:eek:
We should never stop looking for the best sounding speakers. The best I've heard yet are the Snell Phantom. I will never own them.:(

I heard some very expensive Joseph Audio towers with about 40 grand worth of electronics and about 30 grand worth of WIRES! just the other day. Even with the zero point zero zero zero zero zero distortion (or whatever the sales guy told me) and seemingly perfect balance, no speaker I've even heard can give you imaging quite like Martin Logans.

And all electrostatics do the same trick to a certain extent. Having said that, electrostatics have all kinds of drawbacks (read some of the threads about it) but when you put in the work of dialing them in, it's a totally unique experience IMO.

It's just amazing what speaker preferences we have. Now I am not saying ML are bad speakers, I am sure they are just great. If I would be interrogated and would have to listen to ML, within 15 minutes I would tell you what you want you hear and then some.

I've listened to some giant Magnepan, and I didn't like them very much.

I've listened to the ML Vantage, and I thought they sounded pretty good, but not as good as the DefTech BP7000SC, RBH T2, Salon/Studio, Orion, or KEF Reference.

Your brother or brother-in-law works for RBH or something?

Have you auditioned RBH T system?

You sure do have a soft spot for those Def Tech's. Most people wouldn't put them even close to the same league as the others, myself included. Just buy another pair and sell what you currently have to me for the price you paid for the Def Tench's.:D

I call them exactly how I perceive them. No fancy wording. No sugar coating. No vested interest. No brand allegiance.

Everyone can have a different opinion. It's OK.

Absolutely, but I do think you have brand allegiance, which is entertaining considering a lot of others (including me) wouldn't consider those speakers to be in the same league as the Revel Salon2's or the Orion's. To each their own. ;)

He is a wholesaler to installers. Mostly inwalls. I only listened to them in my cousins house and even at 75% off retail I wouldn't waste my time with them. Maybe they are installed them wrong, they just don't sound good at all to me.
