is getting a fluance 200 5 speaker package good quality.. then get cheaper reciever and wait later to get sub good sound quality??

would a sub be required to sound good?
For best value, I recommend Behringer B2030P 2 way monitors. As I have analyzed/measured these, and they are higher in quality, in both physical and measured aspects, than anything else that is even twice their cost, that I know of at this time. Being an unusually good product, and at their respective cost($390 for 3 pairs to use in surround sound), I can't recommend anything else for maximum value, when the budget is being pushed so tightly. You will not do better for the price. You will not even find a match for the price. Note: like most mass produced speakers, these do have some small flaws that can be corrected for better performance. 10 minutes per speaker is all that is needed: stuff like putting a spot of glue on a part that may vibrate/rattle and sealing up an air leak with some putty like material. Or even replacing the internal acoustic absorber material with better quality stuff. These kinds of problems are typical in many speakers - but should always be corrected for ideal performance.

The best value subwoofers I know of at bottom line price are the Dayton powered subwoofers at www.partsexpress.com ; ideally use a pair of the 10" or 12" ones for best sound quality. A single unit will work in a small to medium size room, but two will provide for greater LF output potential and smoother in-room bass response, as compared to a single unit.

Choose any high value receiver in the 250-350 dollar range from a brand with a proven product in this range such as Onkyo or Yamaha.

Like the others before me I would recommend going with a decent receiver and a 2 or 3 channel setup first and then add on.
However, the 904 for 300 sounds like a really good deal. I was surprised looking at the specs that the sub goes to 25hz. Of course it might sound like crap, but the specs look good.
It will probably be ok for movies, but I wouldn't expect much as far as movies go.

isn't the Onkyo 904 just a receiver with no speakers? unless there's an Onkyo HTIB that's a 904.

aah, now I understand. i have no experience with the onkyo HTIB. but i used to have a JBL SCS series HTIB, if you can find a set used, all you'd need is a receiver. the JBL HTIB sounded pretty good to me.

If you must get a speaker system that is 5.1 and has everything built in, I'd get a Logitech Z5500. Then when you can afford to get something better, you can use it as a PC speaker system, instead of having it lying around, or throwing it out.

For clarification.

Red and White RCA (phono) cables are analog. On a CD player or TV you will have Red(right) and white(left) audio outputs. Since the signal is analog it each cable can only carry one channel of audio (mono). Some older DVD players, computers, and Blu-ray players feature 5.1 analog outputs (which are 6 RCA connectors or three 1/8" connectors in the case of PCs).

For clarification, they are wire :). One of those cables connected to the coax digital out should work fine for digital audio (although if it is a true 50 Ohm analog audio cable it won't technically be in 'spec' - digital audio requires 75 Ohm characteristic impedance).

It is the device that won't send digital audio over those connections...just as a DVD player (most at least) won't send 1080p video over component video connections even though the wire can handle it just fine.

I know Seth. I'm not confused when people say 'I'm using an RCA cable (which could mean anything) but I think too many people get hung up on the colors of the connectors as denoting some kind of functionality as if you couldn't use 3 sets of white/red cables for 5.1 audio instead of 6 separate cables with the standard color coding convention.

Well thanks for clearing things up.:D

There is no need to start eight different threads that basically ask the same thing. People are trying to help but you need to keep it to one thread.

I've deleted the others and merged the three most answered.
