Don't buy junk! It's the most expensive purchase you will ever make. If it's new and $100, you can be certain it's junk. Throw $100 away of you want, but that's what you will do. And what's worse it will need to be junked in no time. That's a waste of resources and a source of pollution.

Well if you are totally broke why are you trying to buy a receiver? I would venture to say you WILL not find a decent unit for under 150 even used. If you want the latest connectivity such as HDMI from your receiver you can expect to pay a little bit more. Good luck and try ebay or audiogon. Craigslist is also a great place to look for used receivers......

If you are broke, I bet you have a lot better uses for $100 than a unit that will be so called recycled, or in a land fill and polluting within 18 months.

The prices of receivers drop like a rock in a VERY short period of time. For a hundred and change you will sacrifice a few of the latest features but many of them you can do without anyway. For a beginning system to get started you will not need a receiver that can decode the newest lossless compression formats because you likely would not be buying a hi-def DVD player of any form.

If you look to models about 2 years old, many of them will have at least HDMI pass-thru capability and all of them will support DD/DTS and a lot of different matrix decoders and will be able to do everything you need. You might even still find some that are B stock but actually new.

Why do so many people always try to steer these kinds of posts towards expensive receivers with two million features that will go unused? The OP wants to get started on the cheap. It won't be 'junk' in 18 months - it will be obsolete according to the current state of the art, but still entirely useable. I don't care how much you spend on a receiver, in 18 months it will be 'worth' 25% of what you paid for it.

I completely agree with MDS and thank him for his post. Instead of bashing the budget, let's try to help this person out (like Mike did with his link to H/K gear). It's cool to give the information that $100 isn't going to buy the state-of-the-art, but honestly I think that most people realize that.

I agree with bandphan that looking for a used unit would be a good approach. As MDS said, receivers lose value fairly quickly because of new features being introduced, so you might be able to get more for your money that way. Personally, I'd only buy used from someone that I knew and trusted, but that's just my preference and risk-averse nature.

belkincp, are there any features in particular that you want, or perhaps ones that you know that you don't want?

I am not sure where you live but Craigslist In wash,DC has a number of decent used receivers for under 100 bucks. I bought my Denon 3802 for 200 bucks on craigslist and it has been a great buy. I would suggest looking on your local Craigslist as there are many good deals for very cheap. I just bought a set of Paradigms for 30 bucks and turned around and sold them 2 days later for 275. Sorry to rant but that is the kind of deals you can find on CL..best of luck to you.....

Usually one can find a new Sony STR-DG510 on E-bay for $100.

http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/sony-str-dg510/4505-6466_7-32331244.html

You can get a refurb'd one from the Sony Style store for roughly $69 if you apply (and are approved) for a Sony Style credit card. Sony gives a $100 credit for new Sony Style credit card customers. The refurb is $169 - $100 = $69.

The absolute cheapest receiver at the Audioholics store (already mentioned above) is the Yammy Yamaha RX-V363. Unfortunately it's closer to $200.

There is also the Sherwood RD-6105.

Basically you can check E-bay/Craigslist/etc. for the Onkyo TX-SR304/505, the Sony STR-DG510, the Yamaha RX-V363 (still $170 new :( ), that Harmon Karmon unit (one looks to be going for under $100 now) and the Sherwood RD-6105. There are likely other units as well. These just come to mind.

Craigslist or the local classifieds are a very good idea. One thing I've learned by selling on Craigslist is that it has to be priced very low to get interest. You might just get lucky and get someone like me just trying to unload a used but mint condition receiver for a few bucks rather than just giving it away to Goodwill.

In a few months when I'm done with the house remodel crap, I'll be doing just that. I'd probably price the Onkyo 502 I have at $75. Deals like that can be had sometimes if you look.

I've had good luck with Sherwood products, they are bare bones though (no HDMI in the price you are looking at). The least expensive AVRs that feature on-board HDMI audio decoding are going to around $400 and up, new. You might find an older Onkyo TX-SR674 or Marantz SR-4001 that would work great with the PS3.

How about a brand new "latest model Yamaha" for $199.95 with FREE shipping and another 15% OFF:

http://store.audioholics.com/product/1756/69/yamaha-rx-v363

And the discount code:

And you'd still get their 3 year extended warranty
I think that is his best bet. It is about twice his budget though. I usually advise against buying used unless you can afford to gamble on buying a dud.

Any thing new for $100 will have almost certainly have a short working life.

That Yamaha would be a good bet even if he has wait a little longer to buy it

Normally I would agree with you, but I snagged an entire Sony (Sony HT DDW790 ) HTTiB for $97 around Christmas at Fry's. That receiver does full bit-rate (not just 768kbps) DTS and (of course) full bit-rate DD plus two channel PCM.

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/htib/sony-ht-ddw790

I just did some quick research...

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a contender...

To the OP, this Sony HTTiB (you can sell/junk the speakers/sub and get your $9 back) is only $108.88 shipped at Amazon right now! It has two digital inputs for 5.1. (In most states if you got one at retail for $100 you would pay $6-8 for tax anyway. Amazon saves you gas in that you don't have to drive to the store to pick it up.)

Consumer Depot has it for $80, but it's out of stock.
