I know everyone is all about the upconverting dvd players (myself included), but my dad is looking for a dvd player. So what is the best $200 dvd player for your regular 480i tv's? Some i am looking at are panasonic S52K, yamaha 5950, yamaha S657, yamaha S659, pioneer dv490v. Anyone have any suggestions, alternatives, or recommendations, then let me know.
Thanks Derek

480i DVD

The $150 oppo 970 makes a good 480i DVD player. In fact, some people are taking advantage of it's 480i over HDMI to output to high-end video scallers.
If your dad gets a new TV someday, he will also be able to take advantage of the video upscaling features.

For people with an ancient TV who don't have a DVD player, I usually go for one of the $30 players from Wallmart, bestbuy, etc.

I would use an older 480i flagship player if you can find one on ebay or audiogon, Though I only say that because my Toshiba SD-9000 has some nice features and gives me tv a great signal. It displays true black levels, which is not as common as it used to be. And the best part, it was made in 1999. That makes it almost 8 years old, and it have never been repaired, just self serviced. I have had no issues with it.

Not to sound rude or anything...but why spend $200 on a dvd player to only play SD? Why not just buy a $30 DVD player? Are you looking for anything specific in the audio category?

I just don't see the reason to spend extra money on something for 480i only. Even the thought of upgrading TV's in the future, by then there will be new and/or better things out for the same or cheaper than what you buy today, unless you forsee upgrading in the near future.

I'm not sure what benifit you are expecting by spending the extra $.

Just my $0.02

This is why I suggested an older flagship, or high-end, player, they often can be had on Audiogon and Ebay for less than $100.

Another possibility, just get a $100 or less Progressive scan player, progressive scan is a feature that can be turned on and off.

Just because some one is only viewing in 480i does not mean there is no advantage to using a good dvd player. I upgraded my Pioneer dv578a to a Denon 2910 while using a 36" tubed crt tv. The picture quality was better. The sound quality was much better.

Look into an older used hi end player, they can be had fairly cheap.

All are valid points, and I think a good used one is maybe the way to go. I just know that I had a cheap one and then upgraded to a panasonic s77 with a regular crt and the pq difference was noticable. I now have a plasma and am using the hdmi output. Thanks everyone

The $65 Samsung(Target) in my bedroom looks superb via s-vid sent to a 25in crt. More than pleased with it. It is prog scan so it will do 480p as well as i. No upconverting. Plus plays jpegs. mp3, divx, cd's, etc...not that I use those features but just to let you know. The model above it had memory card slots to view your 'weekend' photos. Nice feature for the Dad. Had it for about 2 yrs now and not one problem at all with unit.
