Basic Mixer cabling question

I have a Denon Mixer, Crown amplifier, JBL powered subwoofer and a couple EV passive tops, that I am trying to connect together.

My question is regarding Subwoofer cabling. With my previous Mixer, there was additional XLR outputs that I was able to use for the Subwoofer. This Denon unit only has 2, which I assume I will need to run to the amplifier. Can someone shed some light on how I would cable up the Subwoofer?

You have a mono out, so the sub would go there

So literally, I would go 1/4 male from the "Mono out" on the mixer, to 1/4 male input on the "speaker level" of the sub?

No I think you have a problem. The mixer will not drive a speaker level input.

You are going to have to use balanced line splitters as you bought the wrong mixer. Your sub inputs are right and left XLR balanced.

This is going to be a little spendy. I can't find you are 2 in four out splitter so I fear you will need to use 2 one in two out splitters. This is the cheapest I can find.

I somewhat feared that this was the wrong mixer for my needs. I purchased it, based solely on the salespersons recommendation. I am changing mixers, from a Berhinger 882, as we needed a way to incorporate a microphone as well as a laptop or Ipod connection.

Would you have any advice on a suitable mixer? This one is going back

I really can't as I have no idea of your application. How many mics do you want to mix? How many unbalanced lines do you need to mix? How many balanced lines do you need to mix? How many channels do you need total. Do you need submix out and master out? How many balanced outputs do you need? How many unbalanced outputs to you need? Do you need a mono mix as well as stereo mix? Do you need 48 volt phantom powering?

Then last but not least what is the application? Is this such for speech, singers, and or instruments.

The big issue for mixers is live music and headroom of the front end. That is what sorts the wheat from the chaff. In my experience most mixers do not have enough head room on the mic input circuits. You can never have too much if you are doing live music gigs!

I would asses your needs and then start looking at what places like Sweetwater and Musicians Friend have to offer. I would say that the staff at Sweetwater are above average in competence, and most likely will get you into the right gear, unlike the the pig dribbler you had the first time.

Not to sound audio illiterate, but that's roughly where my level of expertise falls.:(
We have a very basic setup that we use for different activities at our business. We are FAR from professional audio guys...haha

Here is a list of my components, and I am hoping you can decipher my needs from there.

In my setup, I have 2 Blu ray players, which feeds into the current Behringer 882 mixer. The mixer runs into a Crown amplifier and then out to a couple passive speakers. The mixer also feeds the signal to the JBL powered subwoofer. What that has been allowing me to do is, switch between the audio signals of the Blu Ray players, for showing movies and intro reels, and also provide some music for casual dance parties with Cd's. We don't really do any "mixing", more just switching. It allows me to adjust volumes and select between sources, and that's about all this guy has needed until now. What it does not allow me to do is, have the ability for a microphone. We only need one, for public address during our events. It also hasn't allowed me to use a Laptop or MP3 player, but I believe that may be possible with a XLR to 3.5 adapter, (using one of the available input channels), but I am not sure.....Any advice you can give me would be highly appreciated.

I spoke with the dealer who sold me this Denon, and they recommended trying a 10 foot TRS male to a TRS male cable, going from the mono out of the mixer, into the Line level input on the subwoofer...any thoughts on that?

The TRS connector in the sub is speaker level and NOT line. So that will not work.

You could float a line with a mono TRS plug to one of the XLRs on the sub.

I think this mixer would be more suitable for you.

Any chance they make one of those that's rack mountable?

Most mixers are not rack mountable and good ones tend to be mixer/Dacs and are spendy.

You know what you need and you can do the leg work, there are probably thousands of units out there.

So, I could run a TRS from the mono out on the mixer, into one of the XLR inputs on the back of the subwoofer? What would I be giving up by doing it that way?
