Axiom Audio Epic 80 Home Theater System vs. Paradigm Ref. 100 System

FWIW, I have heard the EP-500 and the PB10, although not in the same room. I did walk around the rooms with the bass heavy material playing, so I got the feel for what the rooms were doing to the sound.

At "normal" listening volumes, both great subs, but to me, the Axiom sounded a bit tighter/articulate with music. I wouldn't kick either out of my room though as far as HT is concerned.

Because of biases that are easy to spot, do whatever you can to experience any product mentioned in these forums for yourself, even in the reviews.

Being moronic enough to have actually purchased and still in possession of a DD-18, 3 EP-600's and a 500, an Ultra and a PB-10 and finally a pair of Hsu VTF-3 HO's, I would say they Axioms are competitive with the best subwoofers in its price class. Are they absolutely the best ? If someone has that opinion, that is cool. But it is just that: opinion, which is to be respected for what it is.

Sheep - The PB10, while a terrific performer for $429 Plus shipping, does not come close to the performance of an EP-600. Honest ... :)

The Fed-eX man arrived yesterday with my Axioms. The poor man busted a gut getting all that up on my porch.

The stuff looks great but it will be a while before it's up and running in the new home.

Will keep you all posted, and thanks for the great input.

Seriously, although the numbers show something, the proof is listening to them.

There is also a british magazine review(What Hi-Fi) that didn't like the PB10.

Now sheep whatever your name is, you're getting out of line. Didn't you teach me that the whole audio thing is a very subjective matter? Whatever numbers you might have about those subs, if that person after a listening session comes to the conclusion that sub A is better than sub B, so be it, it's just HIS opinion.

Yes, but I prefer it my way :D

Here is the measurements I saw on these 2 subs.

Heres one with the SVS PB-12Ultra, SVS 20-39PC+, BK Monolith, BKXLS200

Here is one with the EP600 and SVS PB-10ISD.

And even in that ... "test", the EP-600 delivers signifigantly higher SPL numbers than did the PB10.

I have had a PB10 for 16 months, an Ultra for 9 months, an EP 500 for 5 months and an EP-600 for 7 months. The Ultra and EP-500 are pretty close in performance. Rather than look at the report of one guy who is clearly taking sides, I rely on personal experience.

You are welcome to come visit, and to take a blind test. :)

Craig it's a shame that you have to deal with ignorance on almost every forum that you frequent. On the plus side it keeps your typing skills razor sharp.:)

Would love to attend a gtg @ your place but I think Erie is a little out of my range. How about you send a car from one of your dealerships and I'll test it's durability for your consumers, a vette preferably. :D

Peace, love and Soooooul.

Craig,

I never questioned your thoughts and views. I just like numbers more then words. If you have experience with the EP600 and PB-10, I will trust your opinion. I pulled up those links because it was where I formed my opinion. But now that you have much more experience with the subs, I shall have to form another.

I have always valued your friendship and held your opinion high. Or maybe its the beer talking :D

sincerely,

SheepStar

Who ever gave me the negative chicklet and the condesening remark, at least tell me who you are. I know there is a fear of being slammed with hate mail and PM's but I ALWAYS sign my name, positive for neg.

A few things ...

1. Whoever gave Sheep a "negative", please remove it, if that is doable. He was merely quoting something he had read. Sheep, you are getting a positive from me, if that helps.

2. JR - I appreciate the kind words - this forum is a bit different. I don't find igorance here - just some debate. Sheep and I have had a very pleasant "off line" communication, and he is a good guy, as are most here. And Erie IS NOT the easiest place to get too ... ...

3. SBF - Believe it or not, we have room for all the subs here. Well, my wife disagrees, but she rolls with it ....

Tabcon,

Positioning the M80s can be a bit aggravating. Take your time and play around a bit and you’ll be pleased. Because they are rear ported, they tend to like being away from the back and side walls about 12” or more. Also, towing them in a bit makes a huge difference. You’ll also want to spend a fair amount of time playing with your X-over settings to see how you prefer it. If your receiver allows you to set the mains differently, I found that setting the 80’s to 60 and the rest of the speakers to 80 works best for me. I’m still screwing around with the trim on the EP600. I don’t know where I prefer it yet.

Hey Craig,

You ever take some pics of the gloss black 600 yet that you could post or send me? After hearing how well the 600 plays music, I’m thinking about buying a second one for my two channel system. I need it to match my pair of piano black Wharfendale Opus 2’s. I’d like to see how well they will match. Figuring out where to place the thing will be a challenge………but I sure do like the way it plays music. The LF-1 just can’t compete.

Mdrew - I tried a couple of pics, but they just did not do the look justice. The EP-600 in Piano Gloss Black looks like a high end product - it is KILLER good looking.

Thanks for the great tips.

My room dimensions are roughly 13' x 16'. My installer will be installing banana wall plate connectors throughout the room, but moving the speakers around should not be a problem.

Speaker wire is another thread I think. So I'll just have to start a new one...even though it's probably been beaten to death here...lol. ;)
