Yes, not all DVI displays are HDCP compliant. My former one was, but I know that some will not work at all.
Ok, yeah, I was wondering. Now I recall that the recipient of my older BD30 uses DVI on her PJ. I just reread this thread to see if there was mention of either display, or player, but I didn't catch any mention. You never know if there is an available FW to update HDCP, and even if there wasn't, it never hurts to ask them. They may be able to send an SD card for free in the mail, or something . . .

Tell me what his DVD player is ...
His DVD player is merely a progressive scan (non-HDMI) player. When I owned the TV I wanted to use the HDMI from my Denon DVD 1920 which would output 720p/1080i over HDMI. It took me a long time to figure it out but 720p during a paused scene on my Avia II calibration disc looked much better than 1080i.

I think my Denon did a better job with DVD's than my Panasonic BD60 does but due to a lack of HDMI inputs on my TV I will likely never do a real comparison ... well, probably not. If you can find a hack for the Denon DVD 1920 I might do something with that. I'm itching to get the Denon back in my system for MCM but am kind of out of room for now.

If it was a native 720p TV, then I can see that looking better! That way, the video doesn't have to scale more times than necessary (ie 480 to 1080 to 720). Just 480 directly to 720. In fact, even if it was a 768p TV, it's the same thing: just do it once, by leaving it as 480 in this case.

The real question is if the TV can scale 480 to 720 better than the player. Probably not, depending, cuz Denon has always made decent video players it seems.

It's when you have a 768p TV, AND you're using bluray, that you want to feed 1080 instead of 720. Otherwise, you're scaling one more time than necessary. (Just go 1080 directly to 768, rather than 1080 to 720 and back up to 768, which is something like a bit over 100k pixels or sumthin'.)

It appears it doesn't exist. It looks like there is one for region-free though.

The TV I gave to Eddie of the Deck is a 768 and is really no longer any of my concern. The Denon DVD 1920 however is not something I plan on giving up. It took me like 2 years to figure out the manual but I wasn't doing anything important so I don't mind.

PENG had mentioned using a DVD player for DVD's as possibly wise so as not to wear out a BD player but at this point I'd rather wear out a BD player than a DVD-A/SACD player ... but if the Denon plays DVD's better ...

I'm tired and all that talk of scaling rattled my brain. To make matters worse I found a thread at AVS talking about the 1920 and they mention the 2200. I own both and am trying to sort out who's who.

Sorry, the display is a Proton or Protron from Sears ... a real POS that got returned because a line burned into it at the 4:3 mark and then it came back on the new display. It's some Korean 2nd tier deal and there's no way they are doing FW updates. I think this all came up because Darien thought I bought an Avatar DVD which is a misunderstanding. I was just pointing out that the owner of the Avatar DVD will never buy a BR player #1 because it's not important to him #2 he's tight like Carlos' sister and #3 because his TV won't support it. There's nothing to solve here. Eddie of the Deck is happy with the 32" LCD HDTV that I didn't feel right selling and I'm rocking a Panny with a BD player so he and I both are thinking we got the bull by the horns.
