I use Riopeee on the Pi and JRiver front end (web) on the tablet.

Riopee is an image you burn to a micro SD card and turns the Pi into a DNLA endpoint.
aha, cool
Raspberry Pi order coming up .....

I have 5 ROKUs in my home, basically where I hang a display. They are very fast in response, provide excellent quality in video and audio and are dirt cheap. Its far more practical in my circumstance than a HTPC.

What I've come to learn about certain members that things in life are not black or white as they claim and that one size doesn't fit all. It really comes across as daft when members impose their POV on others. Enough said.

I can understand it being fine if you can access what you want. However, to me it would be limiting as I really do need to open a web browser on our TV systems.
I also am not keen on what I call "hunt and peck" remotes. I much prefer to use a radio keyboard. But as you say each his own. In addition systems can be built for the purpose at hand like my DAW. So, I agree it comes down to what your needs are. But a ROKU would not cut it here for multiple reasons.

Someone here using Mac Mini for music streaming solutions? :)

I am very very very, anti Windows on this... say I want to play music and we get a 30 minute forced windows update, no way... o_O

Apple TV more on movies IMHO, and it only got hdmi out, so I cannot connect it to a Trinnov amp... not my target here ;)

There is some Linux based streaming like MusicLounge ... or others, would be interesting to try some Linux based offerings really dedicated to streaming music and doing nothing else.

Amarra for MacOS  where there is a sedicated iOS app to make it work without crazy tweaking :)
I can't remember any forced updates by Windows. I do have the get latest update thing turned off, tho.

What apps on the Roku do you find the most useful? I purchased a Roku for the upstairs TV to see if we could cut the cable cord but I was disappointed at what was available in Canada. Most of what we watch is on cable and not readily available on the default streaming apps.

Cutting the cord made my bills go up. It was fine at first, but even Hulu live cost as much as cable or SAT now. When we're in Florida we get all of our locals OTA no problem but in Missouri, it's two channels and requires the antenna to be repositioned. I'm going back in Missouri, it's too frustrating.

I keep doing the turn off in Windows 11, but Microsoft keeps turning it back on. I've even edited at cmd line level.

Possibly if you search on the web for a way to disable those Microsoft attempts for good, you may find a solution.

Several years back, Microsoft was trying to update my Windows 8.1 and install W10 on my desktop, but I didn't want it.
By searching on the web, I found a way to remove a file preventing automatic updating to W10.

The command line edit was the only thing I could find, perhaps I'll revisit after the New Year.

I think it is hard to say. However, based on past situations, I would expect the units to become downgraded and increasingly useless over time.

I don't understand the popularity of streamers. I have never owned a brand streamer. However, I do a lot of streaming and with very high quality. I use computers, an HTPC on out living room system and an HTPC and DAW in the studio, both the latter are DIY. I can grab anything I want at the highest quality and don't have to worry about businesses failing or shutting down. Computers are the hassle free way to stream, and I think the most cost effective.

I use one of these in the living room and another in my wife's office.

In my opinion, that approach is the most versatile way to stream and delivers the highest SQ and video quality.
The model above the one in your wife's office (Beelink EQR6) is a steal it comes with 32GB of memory and sells for less than the cost of 32GB of memory now. 32GB DDR5 Ram goes for about 350-400 for builders.
