I use Riopeee on the Pi and JRiver front end (web) on the tablet.

Riopee is an image you burn to a micro SD card and turns the Pi into a DNLA endpoint.
aha, cool
Raspberry Pi order coming up .....

I have 5 ROKUs in my home, basically where I hang a display. They are very fast in response, provide excellent quality in video and audio and are dirt cheap. Its far more practical in my circumstance than a HTPC.

What I've come to learn about certain members that things in life are not black or white as they claim and that one size doesn't fit all. It really comes across as daft when members impose their POV on others. Enough said.

I can understand it being fine if you can access what you want. However, to me it would be limiting as I really do need to open a web browser on our TV systems.
I also am not keen on what I call "hunt and peck" remotes. I much prefer to use a radio keyboard. But as you say each his own. In addition systems can be built for the purpose at hand like my DAW. So, I agree it comes down to what your needs are. But a ROKU would not cut it here for multiple reasons.

Someone here using Mac Mini for music streaming solutions? :)

I am very very very, anti Windows on this... say I want to play music and we get a 30 minute forced windows update, no way... o_O

Apple TV more on movies IMHO, and it only got hdmi out, so I cannot connect it to a Trinnov amp... not my target here ;)

There is some Linux based streaming like MusicLounge ... or others, would be interesting to try some Linux based offerings really dedicated to streaming music and doing nothing else.

Amarra for MacOS  where there is a sedicated iOS app to make it work without crazy tweaking :)
I can't remember any forced updates by Windows. I do have the get latest update thing turned off, tho.
