Audyssey and modal ringing, are multiple subs necessary?

Any idea what Audyssey does that regular eq doesn’t that pretty much kills room modes? Decided to watch Everest tonight with multeq xt enabled and had a bunch of people in my LR. One thing I noticed, even with my small area of mic positions (a 24”x18” rectangle around the center seat), seats along the side walls didn’t suffer exaggerated bass like they did without correction. Most of the seats, even ones outside of the main seating area with lousy bass response sounded almost as good as the mlp, even though I only have a single sub.

I’ve played around with manual EQ on an onkyo receiver before, and while it corrected bass problems for the main seat, moving to a different area reintroduced the problems.

Assuming the sub is placed in a decent location with the best response, is there a significant benefit to using multiple subs for reducing peaks and dips when using Audyssey?
