Audioholics Superbowl XL Party

This year we wanted to outdo ourselves – a challenge to say the least, but one that we felt we could overcome. I mean, this is Superbowl XL, or "Extra Large" as it's being called, so we can’t skimp on any of the details. In this year's article we wanted to focus not only on the audio and visual entertainment (though that is the focus of this piece) but also the other amenities and special touches that make for a really successful and entertaining Superbowl party.

Help for the Super Bowl Setup!

Clint,

Great article on the Super Bowl party! I am throwing one myself this year and have my viewing area 1 all set up.

Samsung HLN617WX
Parasound 2205A
Parasound AVC-1800
Scientific Atlanta 4200HD
Monster HTS5000
Boston Acooustic VR975 fronts
Sonus Faber center
Boston Acoustic surrounds

I am setting up a second viewing area in my cigar room that I am just finishing up (it was 95% done and it took me another 80 hours over the past 2 weeks, go figure...) and I just bought the Samsung HLR5667. The SA STB is the 4200HD and I only have a 2 channel setup in that room, and will have the sound coming through it.

I had expected the picture to be at least as good as the 61" as that one is 2 years old now but there seem to be artifacts on the screen. I can't seem to get the picture as crisp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve:confused:

Cool setup. You may want to adjust the 4200HD settings where you can vary the output of the cable box from "Fixed", to "Upconvert-1" or "Upconvert-2". There might also be a "Through" setting which is typically better as it allows your display to scale... You'll want to try different settings to see which works best for your display.

Artifacts are simply going to be there since we're dealing with cable companies, compression and cheap set-top boxes.

Thank You

Thank you, I will try your recommendations and let you know if the results vary.

I used the STB to cycle through the resolution options and made sure they were all checked. I then changed the setting to upconvert 2 after testing pass through and upconvert 1. The picture is better, thank you.

Regards,
Steve

Clint,

Don't you have TWC? What are you doing about an HD broadcast? Outside antenna? Wide Open West has been advertising on TWC's network to switch over before the game.

Go Steelers!

Clint, excellent article as usual. I'm SOOOO glad ABC has the broadcast this year. For some strange reason my OTA HD signal from my local FOX station has been breaking up on me for the past month. IMO the ABC Monday Night Football game is the best looking live feed on TV. I think a lot of it has to do with the artifical lighting as the Sunday night game looks terrific as well. The colors just pop on the night games.

In my personal experience, I have found that the key to throwing a great super bowl party is to have a small tv set up in the bathroom...

Party Pics

Here are some pics of the party... I have a weak flash on this camera so don't expect too much...

Pic 1: This was a pic of the spread
Pic 2: Here is an angle of the kitchen - two projection screens and a plasma, and people are hanging out in front of a 20" LCD lol
Pic 3: This was the most popular room of course - Reference System 2
Pic 4: Here's shot of the main room with the dual screens
Pic 5: Here's another pic of the main room

Overall we had around 25 people. Perhaps most importantly - we didn't run out of food!

Game was good - the Seahawks self-destructed unfortunately...
