$1,000 System

I like it. The decision to assume at this level people will just stay with the TV they have and wish to augment the sound makes a lot of sense.

I had an earlier version of that Onkyo receiver, $299 at Circuit City about four years ago, I used it for three years and was surprised at how decent it was, solid sound, enough power and did both Dolby and DTS just fine. Of course, at this price point, a decent HTIAB makes the most sense, and I've heard many good things about Athena products at the affordable price points.

Anyone who is starting with just a TV or is currently piping their VCR through an old stereo will find their enjoyment quotient upped significantly with this system. Great job!

Need help with 2k to 3 k amp/pre-amp

Looking to spend 2 to 3 k on amp/pre-amp to replace HK 7000. Have ML Aeoni for fronts...ML Cinema for center and Sonus faber rears. Room and budget dictates only a 5.1 system which I listen mostly to music. No room for a two channel system along with a 5.1. TV is a Sony 30" LCD XBR. HELP!!!!!!

$1120 for a 1000 dollar system?... Stop cheating :)

The receiver and HT speakers system are good values, but that wouldn't have even been a top 5 choice for a DVD/CD Player. There are others available for even less $$ that can also incorporate one if not both of the SACD & DVD-A formats. The Pioneer 563A comes to mind, as well as the new Samsung model. Since the Onkyo has no multi channel pre-ins I would have gone with the JVC rx7030vbk with a street price of about $250. It lacks Pro Logic IIx , but has Pro Logic II. You would only have a 5.1 system anyway, so IIx would go unused on the Onkyo with the system proposed. ;) Admitedly, The JVC's overall sound quality could be lacking, but only slightly with that compared of the Onkyo, and with the Athena micra I doubt it would matter much.

With these changes you would actually remain under budget.

I agree with Hopjohn. I'd hate to spend even $1000 and be locked out of the greatest advancement in music since the advent of stereo, (DVD-A and SACD). These new hi-rez discs offer us the quality of sound we thought we were getting twenty-some years ago when cds were first being touted as the greatest thing in music - what a joke.
A six cd changer might be handy for a party but I'll take better sounding music anytime.
