Sometimes known as Hornbeam- they used it for making hand planes, marking gauges and other handles for woodworking and that stuff lasts forever. I have some hand planes from the 1800s and one from the late-1700s and they're still in great condition.Aka musclewood! At least how it was known locally where I grew up in rural PA.
