Audio and picture out of sync?

Well, I just connected my digital optical output on my HDTV with cablecard to my receiver. It picks up all the DD broadcasts and sounds pretty good, but when I turn up the built in tv speakers, there is an echo effect and I feel my surround sound system emits sound maybe a quarter of a second slower or faster than my tv speakers. Is this normal and is there anything that can be done about this?

I have the same issue with my Sony 42 inch. I just turn the TV speakers all the way down and use the HT system's speakers for everything. The only time I use TV volume is to watch the OTA HD broadcasts. For everything else, it's the HT system.

there should be a way to adjust the delay in your reciever, so that you can match it to the TV.

As was mentioned, there must be or should be a sync adjust/ audio delay/time delay, as some manual may use different phrases. Perhaps there is a submenu under video setting either in the Tv or the cablecard menu. Check both, and adjust to fit. Some DVD players have this to delay the audio as it takes so much longer to process the video and do what the processors do, up/down converging, whatever.

Do you want sound to come from your TV? Since you're using a cable card equipped TV and have audio outputs on the TV that will constantly be used, I would recommend to completely turn off the audio from the TV. I just did this for a friend. He wanted to only utilize his surround system for hearing everything, (that's why he bought the surround system). What I did was access his TV's menu, went under the audio section, turned audio output to on and turned off the TV speakers, it was labeled as AVC or something??? On his TV, a (no sound) signal would appear that would deny my command to turn up or down the TV volume when I pushed the buttons on the remote. This was my check to make sure I had everything correct. I don't assume all makes and models will flash a signal.

ya i just use the surround sound system but sometimes i need more volume/power cuz its a huge room and the audio system only outputs around 600 watts (which is still alot). Pretty soon I'm going to get the 1,000 watt Onkyo S780, but for now this is good enough. I looked through the options and couldn't find anything, so I guess I won't use my tv speakers. The picture and audio seem in sync, its just when I turn on the tv speakers there is a very slight delay (simular to a double track vocal effect on an experimental 60's album). Thanks for the help guys.

One last thing, have any of you found that the tv programs that don't use Dolby Digital sound better and make better use of the surrounds? For some reason, most DD programs have a crappy mix.
