I can’t seem to find an answer so forgive me if there’s a post somewhere. Is there a way to mount Atmos to the ceiling without drilling holes? I’m in a rent house and have heard the bouncing off ceiling Atmos isn’t worth it.

I don’t know if a way that would be secure enough. Personally I’d just do it, and fix the holes with joint compound and paint when it’s time to move. Obviously IN ceiling is a different fix than ON ceiling.
If that’s not gonna work, it is possible to get ok results with bouncy speakers, but be ready to fuss with them to get it work. It definitely won’t be as good, but I’ve seen where people are pretty satisfied. So if you can’t ceiling mount, I’d say go for bouncies but temper your expectations, and prepare for messing with angles and stuff.

Even a ceiling-mounted smoke detector requires holes, so I’m pretty sure a speaker will, too.

Snark aside ( :) ), as William noted, any screw holes would be pretty small as long as you’re drilling into a joist, so after you take the speakers down a dab of joint compound would easily and unobtrusively patch the hole, assuming a white ceiling.

In all seriousness, while you are saying you can't drill into the ceiling, the reality is that you certainly can if you want to, but you have to repair the ceiling and paint it before you leave. Simply putting some drywall compound in the holes will not mask that there were holes there, and you will be responsible.

So, be responsible! Drill a speaker into the ceiling joist, mount it firmly. When you move out, put in ceiling compound, sand is smooth, then go through the $20 burden of painting the ceiling! It's not that hard to do and while it will take half a day or so to take care of, it's not really that big of a deal.

Seriously, paint is cheap:

Like William said above, I wouldn't completely rule out Atmos add-on "bouncy speakers" as they are being referred to. While I do agree, they are not as immersive as true in ceiling speakers but I am using them in my personal system and I love them. They still do a fantastic job bringing another dimension to your listening experience. It does take a little playing around to find the sweet spot but if you are afraid of mounting speakers and repairing the hole, these are a great option.

Hi James, I’m curious. How much fussing around have you spent on placing those DAE speakers? I’ve never set any up, but I understand the context, and I’ve read about a lot of guys who have spent countless hours dialing them in.

Hey William,

Well to be honest I am blessed and cursed with my theater set up. What I mean is, I probably have about two hours in getting them dialed in. Could it be better, yes... Will my room layout and / or Wife allow me to place the speakers in a location that can make it better, no.... So unlike some people I am at a point where they sound good to me and my Wife is happy with their locations.

Sounds like a great balance! Two hours doesn’t sound bad. I’ve seen plenty worse. Lol

Funny, my wife was just sharing her disdain for my monkey coffins today. She does this once in a while until I reminder her what it will cost to replace them. I AM ready to, but life has its demands. So I’m content with 7.3.4 as it is. For now...
