Was the taser single- or dual-shot? If it was a single-shot, once Brooks has fired it, he is essentially unarmed and much less of a threat. Even if it's a dual-shot, the chances of hitting either officer while drunk and trying to run away are pretty miniscule. And, they could have dropped back out of range of the taser while still pursuing him.
Even with both distance shots expended the tasers work on push contact. That also means it could be used on non-cops. Cmon use your thinking cap.

Too what purpose would that serve? He was trying to get away from the cops, who could still chase him from a distance. Was he going to tase some random stranger while trying to escape? See? I'm using my thinking cap.

Try this scenario on for size:

I just, while drunk, wrestled with two cops, over powered them, and even managed to take away a taser and fired it at them. I run through some trees to another adjacent parking lot and see Go-NAD getting out of his car. I'm desperate because I just assaulted two cops and shot a taser at them so now I run over to you, grab you by your hair and taze your ass and then whip off in your ride.

In my mind you ain't random, you're the dude with my ride out of the situation.

When I represented imminent harm that upped the escalation to the use of deadly force. Imminent harm is a nebulous and subjective call. If you brandish a knife, a pipe, a taser at a cop, in the U.S., they are justified in shooting you if they feel they need to.

If the cops are right behind him, he's not going to have time to pull that off.

In this case, there may be a justification - strictly in the legal sense. I'm not in a position to argue that. But, certainly not a common or ethical one.

It's no wonder that faith and trust in the police has taken such a hit.

Who's to say he can't outdistance them and break line of site? I have some Bao-Feng Walki-Talkie's (handheld CBRS) that I can tune into to the car to car police radio. I listened as a suspect wrestled with police at a car dealership and actually got away on foot. They had to call in a helicopter. It hovered over our neighborhood for two hours shining it's floodlight and I assume FlIR. I say two hours because they gave up.

Let that sink in.

Seriously, I have no life.
It's like you never even read my post beyond single or dual shot...
I did read it, but you don't seem to have considered the possibility that he could have pulled it off, even if he was hammered. People are unpredictable enough, add drunk and it's a whole new level.

There's a narrative going on in this country and 100% rightly so and I fully support it. It has got to stop. BUT I'm not going to bend the narrative to ruin someone's life because they 100% did their job with a suspect that could have just complied but took the situation and ratcheted it up from 0-60 in a split second.

An update:
The officer that shot Brooks is being charged with felony murder aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Also, he kicked Brooks after he shot him!:rolleyes:

Kicking Brooks makes firing Officer Rolfe more understandable, but murder seems like an over-zealous charge knowing what their training consists of! The charge will appease the masses and hopefully as more comes out there will be cooler heads with more perspective by the time he is sentenced (assuming he is deemed innocent).

But kicking someone after they are bleeding out? That definitely undermines my thought that this was not a hate issue. Though it is definitely not a hate crime because we don't have those in Georgia (as in there is no law)!

They can charge him with whatever they want. If there's a single juror that's like you or me then he's clear. The kicking part gets you fired for sure. Some are saying he kicked the taser away.

Most Atlanta PD and Fulton officers walked off the job!
GBI is making an investigation before making recommendations for charges, but apparently the DA went ahead and declared charges because he believes it will get him re-elected.
What a sh!t-show!

I'm not surprised. You're going to be fired if you fail to cover up a sneeze...

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this. I'm still puzzled as to why they didn't bother with first aid for 2 minutes after he was shot though.

No. I'm afraid I'll have to call it hearsay right now!
I don't have an easy way to check my source for fact checking.
If it is a lie, it is a good one! - The DA normally never declares charges before the GBI finishes their investigation in a case like this! Suspicion is that the DA thinks it will insure his re-election.

From CNN:

"Hours after a fired police officer was charged with felony murder for fatally shooting a man in the back, Atlanta police officers are not responding to calls in three of the department's six zones, multiple sources within the Atlanta Police Department told CNN on Wednesday evening. "

Well, it looks like the DA who decided to press charges before the GBI did their investigation is trying to change the subject and win voters back:
Early May:

That is disturbingly too parallel to Trump being in charge during the pandemic and making decisions more on what will better his chances of re-election rather than what will be best for the country/people!

Working acute psych I have a lot more empathy for the cops then some

But I do not love them even though I'm white I've had my share of being f@$!ed with by the cops when I was younger

To be fair some of it I had it coming but some of it was absolute bull@$

And George Floyd and other cases are just straight up murder and the cops do need REFORM

But I don't think people realize what it's like when some one comes full on at you full adrenaline with the intent to escape or harm you or harm you to escape

In the hospital I work at now I've been shot at yes shot at some family tricked there son who did need help into coming into the admissions area when he realized what they'd done he pulled out a peice and just lit up the admissions unit

I've been stabbed bit spit on scratched had objects used against me I once walked on a unit where blood was everywhere this dude had beat up 2 female nurses and beat the male tech to a bloody pulp before we got there

All because he didn't get a cigarette when he wanted

I came in blood everywhere people screaming he rushed me right as I went through the door I had a split second to react

I once saw a dude dusted up straight rip a door off the unit a solid metal door with supposedly shatterproof glass and beat the brakes off a tech with it that happened literally in a matter of seconds

It's real easy to say what that cop should have done and what we would have done but get in a situation like that and tell me your handling it any better

Based on what I've been through if I'd been that cop we've been fighting seriously fighting that came out of nowhere he pulls something off me points it at me discharges it I'm probably going to pull the trigger probably on instinct

And as @jinjuku stated a lot of you aren't thinking this through because you haven't been in situations like this I'm not saying all of you I don't know you just some from the way you talk but he's right

Those cops let him break away you have no idea what could go down anything can happen anything

I've been to too many codes where I've been hurt or others were hurt because the order should've been given to go hands on it wasn't we gave the individual too much time and they get an advantage in some way shape or form and ourselves or another patient an innocent bystander ends up getting hurt as a result

And that's on you if you let it happen you gotta live with that

That's what these cops gotta live with if they let something happen and it winds up south

Are cops needing change oh f@$! Yeah is this a good example f@$!# no

You cannot encourage violent resist and use of force against an officer with possibility of there harm just so we can be all touchy feeling and make sure we held the dudes hand and walked him home

I'm not glad he's dead FAR FROM IT but people are trying to be so politically correct or show they care they are not even using common sense anymore you just can't justify this behaviour

I'll say it again if in an investigation it's shown the cop was out of line then fire him charge him the whole nine yards but based on this dudes behaviour the cop deserved that investigation this is not a cut and dry situation at all like in George Floyds situation

Caving into to public pressure is a dangerous line for people to take when administering justice for that cop

The door swings both ways

Or where no better then the organization were trying to reform

And as for people just getting on board and just deriding the cops until they do what they're doing now not responding to calls

Your walking down a dangerous line especially in these unstable times

Some of you fellas know because we've bsed about it on some of these threads

I used to play a lot of underground poker here in Texas big games big action

Got robbed at a game one night

5 of them broke the door down guns out put us all on the floor

What was scary was they didn't wear masks didn't take the security tape and didn't bother to tie up our hands

Seriously once they had all the money and lifted all our wallets I'm over 60 to 70% sure there going to kill us

EXCEPT the waitress that night some how hid underneath the couch and they never thought to check and called her boyfriend who called the cops with her on the line and traced the call

We're surrounded by SWAT and lights are just flashing through the windows

There was a stand off eventually the perps give up as we go out the door the cops don't know whose who and what they are walking into the moment I come through that door I feel a peice pressed right up on the back of my head and that cop told me get on that fence hands up sprawled out you do anything else and I'm blowing your motherfucking head off

My first thought even as I felt that gun pressed against my head was I've never been so glad to see a cop well I couldn't see him yet lol in my entire f@!king life

Just like the lock downs with COVID the crack down on this can be pushed too far for too long

And I don't think some people realize the consequences were gonna get if cops just straight up and quit or don't respond to calls

There s a lot of good people out there but I've seen them in psych there are a lot of straight up crazy evil insane people out there too

I'm actually working with one on a unit now he's on 2 to 1 around the clock presents as a straight up pure psychopath

Eventually the system will have to let him out and this dude will Jeffrey Dahmer somebody no doubght in my mind

You think this blows over to where cops just straight up and quit dudes like that will be handled by the community or the good of our hearts

It's like COVID a lot more people will straight up die from extended lockdowns then from COVID

Still doesn't mean we shouldn't have locked things down but it's the truth as long as we can swallow that truth I'm okay with the decision to lockdown

But it applies here people politicize this too much cops quiet because they just go too crazy going after reform a lot more innocent people are going to get hurt or killed then ever would have happened before

I'm not saying reform shouldn't be done but let's be smart about it

Oh and if you don't think cops won't quit I'd think about it push them hard enough poop on them fire them without due process for every little thing they do and see what happens

If I were in there shoes I'd be thinking about it no lie let's just leave you to your own devices and see who breaks first us or you

I'm not saying it's right but I won't lie and say it wouldn't be in the back of my head

It's a card they could play and poop would not be fun if they did I guarantee you that

Welcome to the Wild Wild West fellas
