If someone gave you ten million dollars you’d say you got screwed.
There is a lot of content out there. We’ve covered this before. You don’t have an Atmos system so I doubt you’re looking for content. And iirc your display is 1080 so on some services it won’t allow you to unlock the Atmos content. Like Vudu and Netflix. It’s stupid for sure, but
STOP SAYING THERE’S NO CONTENT!!!!! Just stop.

It is there. It’s compressed the same way any DD or dts stream is.

Well l Ime MV is about all ya can do. Some titles are still pretty good like on Atv and you can hardly tell, but some are horrible like on dish network. VUDU has been pretty good IME and Netflix mostly too.

The proclaimed death of DVD, BD, UBD, and SACD is perception of reality from those who do not have interest in these mediums and thus believe that other consumers have the same mindset. What media is supported by electronics manufacturers is certainly based on sales and opportunity for sales. Covid 19 is for sure doing one thing, it's killing theaters and movie producers so streaming seems to be how entertainment will be reaching us; but, it will need to come to us with Hollywood financing coming from some place other than China.

Well Netflix and everyone except Vudu are giving out only 5.1.4. Vudu being the only one using 7.1.4.

The Dolby Digital Plus doing Atmos is capable of 7.1.4 if the services use it.

Anyhow the AVR can upmix using DSU or NeuralX to upmix 5.1.4 content to 7.1.4. It’s just something I noticed as a difference between streaming services.

Yeah, you should be aware that if you don't have an Atmos setup, a lot of those services don't have the Atmos tag so you have no idea how much content there actually is.

"Dial M For Murder" (Alfred Hitchcock), has been re-released, re-mastered, for 3D blu-ray not long ago, so that medium refuses to 'die'. And in the early part of the 21st century the UCLA film and television archive schools re-mastered the 14 film collection of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce) movies on DVD.

Like a lot of people here I have a substantial collection of DVD and Blu-ray discs so having access to a functioning player is a concern. I'm actually considering doing something I am loathe to do, which is buy a new Panasonic BD 9000 and put into safe storage so I can replace any of our still functioning players when they eventually expire.

With the recent departure from Blu-ray player manufacturers OPPO and Samsung, does this spell the end of the physical disc format?

Samsung, one of the world’s most prominent electronics manufacturers, and leader in the development of Blu-ray, has announced it will no longer produce and distribute Blu-ray players in the US. That announcement also included Samsung’s acknowledgement that it has completely abandoned plans to roll out a new, high-end 4K ultra high definition (UHD) Blu-ray player originally scheduled for release this year.

This makes us wonder if Apple nudged Samsung in the direction of abandoning Blu-ray. It was announced at CES 2019 that new Samsung smart TVs will come with iTunes built-in. Perhaps the sacrifice of the US Blu-ray player market was Samsung’s price of admission into the Apple ecosystem?

It's really easy to determine if physical media is dead: ask a millennial or Gen Z if they'd EVER buy 1. a player and 2. the discs that go in it. They're going to look at you and hold up their iPhone and tell you they watch everything on it with AirPods.

What happens if your players and physical discs break in the future?

Probably a good idea to start ripping Digital copies of your movies and store them in 2 different sets of SSD.

Physical media isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Heck, Sony is releasing a new 4k player in the coming months. No major company would release a new 4k player, if the market was crashing. Physical media sales are still hitting $900m to over $1 billion in sales. Sure, the glory days were back in the 2000's when they used to make over $20b in sales, but still, these studios love making easy money. It doesn't cost them much to produce the disc and box cover. They make a huge profit per disc sold. Boutique labels are having a ball right now. Arrow and Kino have had massive success these last 2-3 years. Profits are up big time for them. The one stupid thing out of this entire market was Best Buy getting out of the disc business. Millions would head to BB to purchase their physical media. While there, they might walk around the store and potentially purchase something else. It still boggles my mind they got rid of that revenue stream. Which it was an easy revenue stream.

They are not dead at my house. I do some streaming, but most of what I watch is on discs. Peace and goodwill.
