Apple, and their iPod hypocrisy.

Apple recently released the new iPod nano Product Red, but it has been known for some time that Apple uses the manufacturer Foxconn for their iPod parts, which was recently heavily criticized for it's worker exploitation. They are contributing to an enormous problem throughout the world, while badging it as philanthropy.

I dont get your post, how are they being hypocrits?

The red nano funds aid's help, not worker exploitation.

What problem are they contributing too? Just becuase Foxconn has employee problems, that isnt apples problem, its foxconn's. They're a big company, they can deal with it, apple just buys the parts.

I agree, post links to some facts. As it is written, this post reads like a personal vendetta. You can hate Apple all you want, but back it up if you want to post here.

Apple would like you to believe they don't eat babies, but they've never gone on record saying they don't....

....maybe they're to busy, EATING BABIES!

I was mistaken. Foxconn does actually build the iPods for Apple. I can understand that Apple didn't know this prior to June 2006 or so, but Foxconn still builds their iPods, and this product was released quite recently. Don't you find it hypocritical that they use unacceptable working conditions to produce a product that is allegedly doing good for the world? I personally find it deceiving. Apple is currently performing an audit on Foxconn to determine whether or not the working conditions are acceptable, and so far it sound like they aren't very good.

To say that it's not Apple's problem, it's Foxconn's is just ignorant. They are obviously supporting Foxconn financially by building so many iPods. Even if Apple was only buying parts from them, I still think it would be hypocritical.

Three degrees of separation

I think if one were to examine most manufactured goods, you could zero in on some piece of the supply chain that may not be agreeable to some segment of the population for the current egregious violation of the month. In fact, I bet there are websites devoted to this. I for one will sit back here, sipping my coffee made from Columbian coffee beans, which probably came from a farm where the workers also harvest coca leaves on the side. This while watching an LCD monitor whose parts may have been made in a city in China where they are killing all the dogs to prevent rabies. And on and on and on....

I think the point of the post is that everyone is clearly paying to much for their mp3 player.

I mean, if we have the benefit of exploited women and children, shouldn't these things cost half as much?

Give me my Archos any day of the week!

That's very true. Foxconn builds many products for many companies, not to mention the many other companies that exploit their workers. But the fact that they are taking the very product that is assembled through worker exploitation and badging it as philanthropy is disgusting.

Dude, did you read my post.

APPLE DOESNT OWN FOXCONN, its not apples problem, its foxconn's.

Once again.

Can you just stop posting.

AID's, and Foxconn's employee working condition have absouletly nothing to do with each other (unless they get aid's as a workers benefit o_O)

Foxconn just makes them, its apple's choice wether they want to make it look red or donate the profits to charities, not foxconn's.

The workers are just doing they're jobs.

Here's a brilliant idea!!!

Dont buy an ipod if you feel so strongly about the subject, hurp dur!

Nor do I. Please avoid making assumptions.

It is still Apple's problem, because Foxconn is still building iPods for Apple. Foxconn is getting a fair profit off every iPod they build for Apple. If you were to buy this red iPod with the notion that it is doing good in the world by helping AIDS, you are in fact supporting Apple's contract with Foxconn, and in turn supporting Foxconn's labor standards.
Foxconn just makes them, its apple's choice wether they want to make it look red or donate the profits to charities, not foxconn's.
Think of it this way. The only way that Apple can afford to give $10 to charity on these sales is because of the ridiculously low labor costs they have.
Dont buy an ipod if you feel so strongly about the subject, hurp dur!
I'm not planning on it.

I understand that tons of companies use exploited workers. The reason this one bothers me is that many people will buy this iPod with the intention of doing good in the world, when they are actually supporting exploited workers in Asia.
