Anyone here into bluegrass?

I love the music and play it as well (mandolin). I grew up around it and it is by far my favorite. I love the drive, the energy, everything. I'm not into the "old-timey" sounding stuff (the typical stereotype of bluegrass). I like the more modern bluegrass. Artists like Del McCoury, Ronnie Bowman, IIIrd Tyme Out, The Rarely Herd, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Lonesome River Band, Rhonda Vincent, Johnny Staats, Ricky Skaggs, Aubrey Haynie, and The Gibson Brothers, appeal to me. The list could go on. Anyone else into this stuff?

My old man has an Alison Krauss album. I've always meant to get around to buying some of her material because I really like it, but never seem to remember.

I would add Nickel Creek to that list; they're amazing, especially Chris Thiles. Count me as a big fan of newgrass.

Try the Austin Lounge Lizards...they'll have you rolling on the floor. Around here, we have some local groups like Sourdough Slim & the Saddle Pals, DooDooWah - put on a really fun show.

I too, grew up around it, and played the git for years. I have several hundreds of cds that run the gammut from Flatt & Scruggs to String Cheese Incident. I love (and mostly have) the new alt. country....lots of jam bands to enjoy...SCI being one of the foremost. Yeah, and since I added my Hsu sub, WOW, what an enjoyable instrument the standup bass is!

Nice to know there's another 'real' music lover out there, lol. (I love abuse...bring it on, guys.)

I second this, the Nickel Creek SACD I have sounds great. This past summer they were on PBS's Soundstage. They were better live than they are on their CD. I also enjoy Alison Krauss. I wouldn't mind adding more Bluegrass to my collection.

I'm not really sure what my lawn is composed of. Might have a percentage of Kentucky bluegrass in it.

There's not enough time to listen to all the good stuff out there...I am with the rest of you in the old timey vs newsgrass. I need to get more Nickel Creek, they are awesome. I also need to get more time in the day & pull my mando out more often (and then maybe even learn to play it with something approaching basic skill).

I'm very definitely into bluegrass but absolutely NOT country. I mixed sound for a bluegrass band in Boston called Spyder Bridge which was good for free beer usually in the bars. Boston had OK bluegrass for a bunch of Yankees. My fiddle player friend in the band took me to the Galax fiddler's convention in SW Virginia which was a great time and is always worth a trip.

My favorite is the Seldom Scene. If you see a copy of "Live at the Cellar Door" be sure to grab it.

One of the benefits of my new car is the bluegrass on XM satellite

I must say I'm surprised at the intrest in bluegrass. I think it's great music. I make my way to most of the festivals in Western Washington. I can't get enough. I like Nickel Creek as well. I forgot to mention them. If you think Chris Thile is good now, you should see video of him at 8 years old.

There is a very good documentary called "Bluegrass Journey" (I think). I picked up a copy at IBMA in Louisville and I found it to be quite good.

I also have that Seldom Scene album. It is very good.

Are there any good bluegrass SACD or DVD-A discs? I don't have a SACD/DVD-A player yet but I will if I can get some good content for it.

There is a good DVD-A by Bela Fleck with many famous oldtimers on it. It is called "Tales From An Acustic Planet: The Bluegrass Sessions Vol. 2" and has Vassar Clements, Earl Scruggs and John Hartfors amongst others. The sound is excellent. It will also play on your DVD video player of course.

I've hesitated jumping into this but thought, what the duff, I may have something of value to offer someone here. While you can't label them Bluegrass, or any other singular label for that matter, the band Donna The Buffalo, http://www.donnathebuffalo.com/ is most interesting. They are a mix of country, folk, rock, American fiddle music, bluegrass, Cajun, and Zydeco. And as any member of their rabid followers (known as the Herd), will attest, their music should be seen and heard live to be truely appreciated. They play mainly up and down the US east coast hitting many of the Grassroots festivals, their music daring you to sit still. Ask nicely and they're likely to let you plug your recording equipment directly into their soundboard. If you've never heard (of) them, check out samples at amazon, etc. and see what you think. Those who have heard them before probably know what I mean.
