Am I wrong about Blu Ray?

It's my understanding that Blu Ray players will play standard DVD discs and CD's. Is this correct? Also many will play SACD.

Blu Ray movies don't have both standard and high def versions on them though. Correct?

HD-DVD discs do have both formats recorded though and you can put an HD DVD disc into a standard DVD player and watch the standard version. Correct?

If this is correct, could you watch the standard def version of a HD-DVD disc in a Blu Ray machine if you did happen to buy the wrong format...I mean the loosing format...I mean. ^_^ You get what I'm saying.

Blu ray players will play cd's and standard def dvd's, as will HD DVD players, both will upconvert standard def dvd's as well. Blu ray discs are not dual sided, with the HD movie on one side, and SD movie on the other.

Not all HD DVD discs are dual sided, only some, and as far as playing the standard def side of a dual sided HD DVD in a blu ray player, I don't see why it wouldnt't work. If I come across another one, I'll pop it in my PS3 to see what happens... I would have tried this for you a week ago while I still had Oceans 13 at the house.

Since I have yet to make the jump, I wasn't sure and my wife was talking to her sister about it and they were a little wrong about it so I wanted to verify before telling them the wrong info.

Thanks. I'll be getting a PS3 before too long, but just ahven't done so yet.

SOME HDDVD discs have both formats recorded. You need to make sure you bought the version you bought is the HD and SD version. Transformer's, for example, is HD DVD only- meaning that it cannot be played on an SD machine. Typically the HD+SD combos are more expensive than the HD only discs.

That's a great question, and I have no idea :D. Logically, as we just worked out, there'd be no reason why you couldn't play the disc in a BD machine, however I wouldn't be surprised if Sony and/or Toshiba used some sort of technical trick in order to disable this from happening. Best way to figure it out- take a disc to your local Best Buy and have them try it out- no harm in asking.

Yes. I just tried the SD side of a Dual-Format HD DVD in my Panasonic Blu-ray player and it worked fine.

There are NO Blu-ray players that I have seen besides the PS3 that play SACD (40G does not play SACD).

.
One note on that. There are a couple 1st gen Blu-Ray players that actually won't play cd's so make sure you check the specs. Also, as far as I know, only the PS3 plays SACD while the Panasonic DMP-BD10A plays DVD-A
