Anyone that's into anime has Akira in their collection. I remember seeing the movie in a theater in 1988. Amazing. The English voice actors were kinda lame, but I can get over that. I bought the VHS back in the day, and later bought the Japanese language subtitled version. I never bought the DVD, because I was like, "Dammit, I've already bought this movie twice!" But when it came out on BD I had to have it.
So anyway, I popped it in last night and was immediately impressed with the audio. For those of you that have seen the movie, the beginning part where the camera is backing out of the crater left when Tokyo was destroyed by Akira sounds incredible. The drum hits there were richer and deeper than I've ever heard them. So then I fast forwarded to the scenes where Kaneda's gang is fighting the clowns and was further impressed. The music sounded amazing and I noticed more distinct sounds to the voices.
I clicked info on my PS 3 and saw the the Dolby TrueHD track was 12Mbps, almost the same size as the video track!!! I then flipped through the book that came with the disc and read that this disc is the first BD to take advantage of the "Hypersonic Effect". According to the book, the audio track extends up to 90kHz!! I haven't finished reading the booklet to learn about the details, but I can definitely vouch for the amazing sound quality of this disc.
Anyone that likes anime, or wants a BD with incredible sound should pick this one up!
