Akira BD the new standard for uncompressed audio?!

Anyone that's into anime has Akira in their collection. I remember seeing the movie in a theater in 1988. Amazing. The English voice actors were kinda lame, but I can get over that. I bought the VHS back in the day, and later bought the Japanese language subtitled version. I never bought the DVD, because I was like, "Dammit, I've already bought this movie twice!" But when it came out on BD I had to have it.

So anyway, I popped it in last night and was immediately impressed with the audio. For those of you that have seen the movie, the beginning part where the camera is backing out of the crater left when Tokyo was destroyed by Akira sounds incredible. The drum hits there were richer and deeper than I've ever heard them. So then I fast forwarded to the scenes where Kaneda's gang is fighting the clowns and was further impressed. The music sounded amazing and I noticed more distinct sounds to the voices.

I clicked info on my PS 3 and saw the the Dolby TrueHD track was 12Mbps, almost the same size as the video track!!! I then flipped through the book that came with the disc and read that this disc is the first BD to take advantage of the "Hypersonic Effect". According to the book, the audio track extends up to 90kHz!! I haven't finished reading the booklet to learn about the details, but I can definitely vouch for the amazing sound quality of this disc.

Anyone that likes anime, or wants a BD with incredible sound should pick this one up!

I'm not into anime, but this hypersonic effect sounds interesting, I can't wait to hear it on some action movies in the future.

Anime rocks! They need to do the whole Cowboy Bebop series on BD.

I haven't watched the whole thing, but I did see that opening scene and it was impressive. I have the Anniversary DVD and the video does look better on the BD. A lot of small video issues that had been present for a long time in the SD DVD versions has been cleaned up.

That's funny, when I first saw it I liked the original English dub track; I liked some of those voices.

I wonder what 90KHz gets you when listening. Maybe the ability to have some harmonics set up in your room or something?

I wonder if they'll do Evangelion in BD Hypersonic?

Appleseed Ex Machina? Not as good as Akira by far, but not bad.

They need to release the Bleach Movies on Blu ray, and release the third one in North America. I have the first movie in HD, but it doesn't have HD sound.

They need to put put the first CG Appleseed movie on BD. I'd buy that in a second!!!

I liked the animation in ExMachina better, but the story was much better in the first one.

The DTS-ES track on the End of Evangelion movie was pretty good, thoubh I don't think we will see Neon Genesis on BD anytime soon.
