Advice on a 2.1 Internet Music Setup for Large Room

For her birthday, my wife asked for a nice radio, internet radio, cd player setup for the living room-kitchen area (they are open to each other). This would be music only as we already have a dedicated theater room. Primarily sources would be FM radio and internet radio. Some CD's, but that is mainly for my daughter (5 years old). I think I can get rid of the FM radio requirement since her favorite station also broadcasts over the internet.

I've narrowed down my search for a receiver to the Denon Ceol Piccolo. Nice and small and came highly rated on a Audioholics review. Any others I should consider?

Next is speakers. Considering what she is using for sources, any recommendations on $$$ range to target? The living room is larger (20x20) with a high vaulted celing open to the 2nd story loft and open to the large kitchen and breakfast room. Looking to wall mount a pair a speakers and have room for a sub if need be. Would like to stay under $1000 total for speakers, but I don't want to spend the $1000 if there really isn't going to be any difference compared to a $500 set since she is using lower quality sources. Unfortunately I live in a small town so no real options for going to listen to various speakers in person.

One set of speakers I have been looking at are the NHT Superzero 2.1 combined with a SVS SB1000 sub ($700 total) or step up to the Absolute Zero's for an additional $200.

Those Elac speakers have a rear facing port so I don't think they would work well wall mounted.

AL2's recommendation is good, but the speakers are largish with rear ports if wall mounting is a necessity.
I have a pair of SuperZero 2.0's paired with a Photon 8 subwoofer and it is an amazingly nice setup for music.
You can read about the Photon 8 here:

I mention this because there is one for sale here:

I think the SB1000 is a good sub, but I believe the Photon 8 will outperform it for music considering that the SuperZeros will beg a high crossover point.

That said, it sounds like you have a large area to fill. If you really want high SPL's the SuperZero's may fall short. (corner load the sub and it will keep pace with the SuperZeros without problem for any traditional music).

My wife tends to be a bit sensitive to loud sounds so she doesn't crank up the music too loud. Larger size is ok, just need a sealed or front port speaker so I can wall mount them.

In that case, I would stick with what I suggest above. The Photon 8 retailed for $900, and Alphaiii has been around here long enough to be a secure guy to do business with.
The SB1000 is a good sub, but I consider the Photon 8 a "standard bearer" for what can be done with a 8" sealed sub. I had a pair of them set up in my living room and a pair of Klipsch SW310's. A friend came over and listened to them blind and he was amazed when I revealed that his preference was for two 8" sealed subs over two 10" with dual passive radiator subs. The 8" had a stronger "hit" and the 10" just weren't as tight readily apparent on a kick drum.
If space is not a consideration and you want to keep the budget to a bare minimum, the SUB-1200 recommended by AL2 is a good option. The sound is very good, just not so great as the Photon 8.

Thanks for all the info. That does save me some money getting the sub used. Do you think it would be worth upgrading to the Absolute Zero?

Speakers/subs are always the best place to realize gains in the sound of your system. I do believe the Absolute Zero would be a worthwhile upgrade and think you will have a very nice (and completely sealed) system. I am not familiar with them in particular, but them seem very popular. It is my assumption that they would do a better job if you wanted to get a little loud when the woman is out. You might want to talk with NHT about the benefits of going from Super Zeros to Absolute Zeros. See if the maximum SPL is much greater (and ask what frequency you should cross to a sub at while you are at it)

If you have no intention to hook analog (RCA) to this system, you might consider getting an Emotiva XDA-2 for $200 and using a Crown XLS-1500 for another $200.
The XLS-1500 has an internal fan and can be put somewhere out of sight. The nice thing about this setup is the XLS allows you to apply a high pass filter to your speakers so they are not trying to reach their maxumum excursion at 60Hz while simultaneously trying to provide detailed transparency at 1000Hz. Of course, the crossover of the sub will be set to match the crossover the amp applies to the Main speakers for easy integration.

Note that you will need a pair of these to go from the XDA to the XLS:
