For the love of all that’s great and good in this universe, we’re talking about common sense here people!
If the circumstances in your life dictate that you have to move to a foreign country in which the predominant language spoken is different than the language you currently speak - LEARN THE OTHER LANGUAGE!!
No one expects you to become fluent overnight, but for crying out loud, make an effort!!
Expecting to flourish in your new surroundings is dependent on your ability to communicate effectively with the people you encounter on a regular basis. You can NOT expect other people to know 15 different languages including yours! Likewise, I should not have to rely on an interpreter to order my lunch at McDonalds!!
ALSO - when you move to a foreign country you have to be prepared to assimilate to a large degree. Learn the local laws, customs, rules (written and un-written) and accept that you will be expected to follow along. No one is telling you to give up your native language, culture, religious beliefs or your identity - BUT - If you want to get along well with those you will be going to school with, working with, living near, dealing with…get with the program!!
And yes, this means if you come from a country where it is customary to be loud, pushy, rude and self important and you move to an area where the people are more laid back and considerate of each other, don’t cop an attitude when these “new” people don’t react to you the way you want them to.
Now, before anyone starts throwing around the “arrogant American” epithets, I would Tell anyone from this country moving to a foreign country the same thing - Have the respect, decency, responsibility & common sense to learn the language of where you’re moving and the laws, customs…etc. BEFORE going, and count on continually learning once you get there. Otherwise, you’ll move…but you won’t go anywhere
