If you only want 480p then I wouldn't spend more then a $100.00. For my money and your price point @ $200.00 or less the oppo 970 is your best bet.:)

That Oppo is going to give you the best picture for the money. It's also nice to have Divx available if you burn movies from your PC. I picked up a progressive scan Toshiba SD3990 for $29 that plays Divx and the picture is perfect for non HD content. It's used on a secondary 36" Toshiba CRT.

So does the extra $171 justify a better picture? If you are a video fanatic, yes.

DVD player to play old dvds

Is it true that these cheaper DVD players are better for playing the old rental DVDs? My current Sony player frequently gets stuck while playing these dvds but no problem with newer dvds.

If you are connecting to the receiver digitally one DVD player is about the same as the rest for audio reproduction, be it a $100 Sony, Panasonic, Tosh etc. All DVD players have progressive scan these days. For HT the video reproduction seems to vary based on all the posts I have read, with the Oppo leading the way in affordable solutions. FWIW, I have absolutely no complaints about my Denon 1710 DVD player after two and one half years of use. A nice piece of equipment.
