$500 2.1 System

Im on a buget and need a good 2.1 set up maybe with out a sub. I only have 500 bux and with that i also need a receiver. I fine with slightly used stuff from some place like audiogon or ebay.

The room thease will be in is about 15*20ish about 9ft tall. And will need to be able fill the room loudly from time to time.

I can get some MTX AAL212's for 300 shipped thats for a pair. I havent seen any one on any forums that rilly has thease and any one i talk to dosent seam to know much about them. From the reviews it looks like the would be able to play music loudly with ease.

For 335 i can get some AS-F2's or 300 if i drive 4 hours to pick them up. The only thing with thease is ive read that there not vary good with hard rock/metal and that there just not vary agressive. And hard rock/metal is all i listen to...

But im still open to more siggestions. Just want the best for my money. I have posted at some other forums incase any one here goes to any of the other forums i posted at. Just want some more opnions.

If you want loud rock, you'll need high spl. I'd recommend 8 ohm tower speakers rated over 94dB at 1w/1m. Klipsch, Cerwin Vega, and some vintage 12" or 15" 3 ways come to mind. Also check into DJ towers. Ugly, but they're loud and great with rock.

With spl's at 95dB or higher, you don't need to go all out on a receiver. The vintage stuff at ebay will more than fill your room with sound.

If the specs on those older AAL212's are the same as the new ones, they would be a decent speaker. I would also recommend anything from the cerwin vega E-series, they have a much higher sensitivity and would therefore be able to be driven to louder volumes with the same amp. Some models in this series have bass response into the mid-20's, which would eliminate the need for a subwoofer.
To drive them I would recommend the Harman Kardon HK-3380.
it's a nice stereo receiver with a true 80 w/ch with lots of hookups, including composite video switching.
However if you ever want to upgrade to a full home theatre with surround sound you will need a more powerful receiver. In that case I would look at the yamaha HTR series of receivers.

I'm on board the Cerwin Train. Try a pair of CERWIN VEGA E712 Floor Standing Speaker from JR.com, brand new for about $400 including shipping. they have a 98db sensitivity and they go down to 28hz so they will go low and loud. http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=14911
I'd also suggest you go either vintage gear for the stereo receiver or else look at something like this: http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4018707
The 50 watts that receiver puts out should have those cerwins pumping. I'd prefer a receiver with more juice, but I can't fit it in the budget.

A quick comment if I may. Those MTX speakers you are considering aren't the greatest speakers IMO, but in your pricerange they are ok.

Thanks for all the imput. I dident eavn know HARMAN KARDON made a stereo receiver.

Well cence my post some other people have said the MTX's are pritty harsh. Loud but harsh. So i dont rilly know what i think about them now. Out in our garage we have some older Cerwin vega's and imo thay sound pritty good and thay have been throw alot of abuse.

JR has the HK3380 for 219 with free shipping whitch sounds pritty good. And those cerwen vegas for about 150 50 or so shipping would be right on buget.

You could pick up a pair of Athena AS-F2's or BIC acoustech floorstanders in your price range.
 
Dose any one know what db those Cerwin Vega E712's should be at at 50W?
 
They should be about 115 dB max at 1 meter away in an anechoic environment.
So minus volume loss to the listening position plus room boost...

it'll be loud
 
Whitch would be better. HK3380 or Onkyo TX-SR503? Assumeing thay where the same price.
 
The HK would have more real power per channel, but is only a stereo receiver.
Whereas the Onkyo would give you less power per channel but more channels and many more features. So if you only want a stereo system and would be happy with that for a long time, go with the HK.
If you think you might get more speakers and make a home theatre go with the onkyo.
 
How are JBL's speakers? H/K has some ending with in a fur hours.
 
JBL's speakers have a much lower sensitivity so they would require much (3 - 4 times) more power to get to the same volume.
 
Don't get me wrong, that's not bad sensitivity. But they will take much more power to get loud. And since you listen to a lot of heavy music, i would assume you would want as loud as you can get.

Speakers with higher sensitivity aren't necessarily better, they just take less power. Some people prefer high sensitivity speakers with tube amps.
I on the other hand have some speakers that have 85 dB sensitivity that eat watts alive, but they sound nice at low volumes.
