5.1 Systems Under $500

I am looking for a system that is under $500 to go with my Onkyo SR 707 with the ability to upgrade later. It is mainly used for movie in a 11x11 living room. Ideally, I would like to start with satelite type speakers set so that I can hang them up on the wall (front) and ceiling (back) because of young children. Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Terry

I prefer slightly larger bookshelf speakers to satellites because many reach down low enough to allow you to cross them over at 80hz. That makes the transition of lows to the subwoofer less obvious. If you must have satellies then for your price point you might look at Klipsch Quintets. You can often find then on sale or open box for $200-230 - check Vanns clearance center. These only go down to 120hz so you'll need a subwoofer that goes at least that high to pair with these. Perhaps a Hsu Research STF-1 - if you don't have anyone living below you (it fires down). Some here recommend Dayton subs but since I haven't heard one I'll let someone else recommend a front firing sub.

Personally I'd rather see you invest in 3 quality bookshelf speakers for the front and a good subwoofer. Then buy the surrounds when you have more money. In the long run I think you'll be happier. JerryLove talked me into trying a pair of Behringer B2030P ($130pr @ Amazon) in my home-office and I like them. Two pair would give you a left right and center - and a spare for $260. That leaves you enough for the Hsu or Dayton sub.

Or you could save a bit longer and buy the $800 5.1 package from SVSound. That's something you won't outgrow for years.

Thanks Sholling for the suggestion.

Any thought on starting with Polk RM 705 and get a pair of B2030P down the road to make it 7.1?

Thanks,
Terry

To be entirely honest I haven't listened to Polk satellites in years. They just weren't my cup of tea. That's also a pretty anemic sub. But speakers are subjective and the best thing you can do is compare the Klipsch and Polks side by side and see which you like.

As far as mixing and matching goes the critical thing is that the front 3 (L, R, & C) have the same sound signature. Matching the surrounds is a bit less critical. That's why I suggest starting with a quality 3.1 speaker system and then grab a couple surrounds off fleabay when money allows. 90% of the sound from a movie is coming from the 3 fronts. But we each have our own priorities and if you want a 5.1 satellite system now then that's your choice and you really should try to listen to both the Klipsch and the Polk and decide which sounds best to your ear.

Even though I can live with the Polk RM 705 after listening the system in the store yesterday, I am leaning toward the SBS-01 system suggested if I can convince the wife. I agreed that I would be happier with the bookshelf system in the long run. Another option that I am looking at is the following set (~$400) if I can't get my wife on board with the SBS-01:
- Polk Monitor 30 (2 pairs)
- Polk CS1
- Polk PWS10

Thanks,
Terry

At this point with the speaker company closing down I'd hesitate to invest too much with them.

There are a lot of good deals on the now discontinued Energy Take Classic series. 499 for the 5.1 I've seen.

Thank you all for the suggestions and patience as I am going through the process. The following are still in the consideration:
1. Polk RM 705 ($329)
2. M30 (2 pairs)/CS1/PWS10 ($400)
3. Paradigm Cinema 70/110 CT => Only if they go on sale ($299 and $499 respectively)
4. Klipsch Quintet SL/Sub ($399 + $Sub)
5. SBS-01 ($799)

I have elimiated the B2030p (3 pairs)/Sub option because of the non-grilled. My wife does not like it = "NO"

Thanks,
Terry

SBS-01 vs Klipsch HD 1000. Which one would you get?

Thanks,
Terry

For $599 you could pick up the Energy RC-Micro 5.1 all in one package. Reviews for this mini monitor setup are all excellent.

Darn, I was so ready to pull the trigger on the SBS-01 until I found the shipping cost is $169. Any comment on the following review that I came across?

He's in an 11x11 room which is practically a cubicle.. I've demo'd the Energy's and they pretty amazing baby speakers. Probably about 1/3 the size of those SVS speakers. They would be easy to wall mount out of the reach of kids.. Plus once you add an SVS tank sized sub into the equation your losing a lot of space in a small room.

The cylinder is pretty small foot print, and the main reason for the comment is the energy's sub has a f3 point of 36hz, and imho that will not cut it for ht.
