I prefer slightly larger bookshelf speakers to satellites because many reach down low enough to allow you to cross them over at 80hz. That makes the transition of lows to the subwoofer less obvious. If you must have satellies then for your price point you might look at Klipsch Quintets. You can often find then on sale or open box for $200-230 - check Vanns clearance center. These only go down to 120hz so you'll need a subwoofer that goes at least that high to pair with these. Perhaps a
Hsu Research STF-1 -
if you don't have anyone living below you (it fires down). Some here recommend Dayton subs but since I haven't heard one I'll let someone else recommend a front firing sub.
Personally I'd rather see you invest in 3 quality bookshelf speakers for the front and a good subwoofer. Then buy the surrounds when you have more money. In the long run I think you'll be happier. JerryLove talked me into trying a pair of Behringer B2030P ($130pr @ Amazon) in my home-office and I like them. Two pair would give you a left right and center - and a spare for $260. That leaves you enough for the Hsu or Dayton sub.
Or you could save a bit longer and buy the $800
5.1 package from SVSound. That's something you won't outgrow for years.
