My HT budget is so depleted, I can only afford an old used $350 Denon AVP-8000DTS that only has DD/DTS decoding and no HDMI inputs.

So is the DTC-9.8 $1,600?

In the thirty to forty threads on this (some dedicated, most just hijacked), I've lost touch of one important - at least in my mind - detail.

Greg (ahem...pardon me, P-Dawg), why are you getting a new receiver in the first place? You mentioned the new codecs, but couldn't you pass multi-channel analog from a player to your current receiver? I'm just asking if this is really worth it to you, and suggesting that you might want to reconsider if this is what you really want. At first, it was a chance to get a good deal on a new Yamaha, a brand that you had been happy with and that would get you a new toy with some new capabilities. That didn't pan out because the new unit had enough about it that you didn't like. So, is it time to step back and reconsider getting a new receiver at this time? Or do you really want a new receiver bad enough to branch into brands that you previously didn't seem to have much interest in (Pioneer Elite, specifically)?

Just putting the thought out there. Say the word, and I'll be right back into the "spend your money," and "get the ICE, babeeee" crowd.

So you settled for an old Denon? Probably a good idea because you're unlikely to notice a significant improvement in sound quality from new electronics until you upgrade to a proper set of speakers anyway.

$1,600??? This is Canada, baby. We don't get deals like that. Every consumer in America that paid full list for that unit is getting a better deal than me and I actually did get a significant discount from list on it.

I use the PS3 so I can't use the codecs through analog. My focus on a new AVR is HDMI but I am picky on the looks. I dont like a lot of knobs or buttons on the front of the AVR. Stupid...maybe but it's my junk!

Have you considered the Onkyo 905 or 906? Awesome amp section, torroidal transformer, tons of power, different amp from the lower model Onkyos that run hot. Awesome video section, Reon HQV chip, MN and BAR reduction.

See what they say about the 875 in the same article you linked from the Denon. Look at all the passing grades where the Denon failed. And the 905 has the MN and BAR on top of what the 875 in this review has.

I was referring to the PS3's lack of Multi-Channel Analog Output.

Yes, it does. Denon even sent the D-link cable along with it, which I guess is an ethernet cable.

I have never used the D-link before.

So do you know if by using the denon link with a compatible receiver or processor do you not need an hdmi/analog cable any more? I know the super expensive processor and amp combo can use the denon link cable instead of having an analog cable out of each pre-out. Does it work the same with other compatible denon link gear?

The D-Link3 should work with all D-Link gears.

If all you want is the AUDIO, then yeah, the D-Link can replace both the Analog and HDMI.

But with HDMI 1.2 & 1.3, I just don't see the use of D-Link, unless your receiver doesn't have HDMI 1.2 or 1.3. I know that you can use either the D-Link or HDMI, but not both at the same time.

But practically all receivers with D-Link3 have HDMI also.

When HDMI1.0 or 1.1 were out, you couldn't get DSD-Direct via HDMI. So you had to use D-Link3 to get DSD-Direct. But when HDMI1.2 came out, you could get DSD-Direct.
