If you have 2 subs, is it best that they be identical?

Normally yes, they tended to work better that way. Of course there are ways but it can be very complicated. One of the problems is the phase relationship around the tuning point which can cover another octave, so more damage can be done than good. Do you have a couple in mind?

I already have a M&K 12" sealed sub that is 17 years old but still seems OK. Considering getting another M&K 12". Budget can go above that one but don't know if it would make a difference. Do not want to buy 2 new subs.

You realize M&K now isn't the same as M&K then company wise? I don't know if they still make the same designs but you might double check that.

I just substituted an LCR950 for my center channel. Was previously LCR 850 Center It sounds much better.
I had already purchased it to use as the new center base channel and plan to put the old 850 as the front center height channel. It sounds much better...but expected since the old one is 17 years old. Awaiting new home to be completed. I assumed that it would be best to stick with same brand when adding more speakers to the 9.1 system that I've have since 2003. Perhaps I was wrong. Still have not purchased the 2nd sub.

Ya know... I do know M&K used to make a quality subwoofer. Don’t know much about them now. My personal opinion is you should consider starting over. While I’m sure your subwoofer is good and all that, they’ve come a LONG way in 17 years. While subs aren’t cheap, I think you might be surprised at the performance.
I might be barking up the wrong tree, but that’s my .02.

The little I see about his sub (a V850 per another post by Bruce) is it's spec'd in the manual as 20-200hz +/- 2dB....but the S&V measurements are quite a bit different....going by the S&V I wonder if the M&K spec was some sort of in-room thing vs anechoic, but the measured response would lead me to just start over with subs....per S&V "The V850's close-miked response, normalized to the average level from 40 to 80 Hz, indicates that the lower -3dB point is at 33 Hz and the -6dB point is at 26 Hz. The upper -3dB point is at 164 Hz with the low-pass-filter switch set to bypass"

Did you go with the Monolith 15"?!?!?!?!?!

That is the sub I use, you will LOVE it if thats what you went with!!!

I was on the fence when I purchased it because I had a DIY Ultimax 15 and was considering building a second. Instead I became obsessed with the specs etc of the Monolith and pulled the trigger. I couldnt be happier.

Congrats on the purchase.

Decided to do M-215. Way too much for current house, but new one will have room officially 20x21 with no walls on right or rear so additional 16 feet in rear and 9 feet on right.
Will need to do lots of speaker upgrades eventually on all of the 17 year old speakers, but don't want to need to replace sub for long time....know will still need to get a new second sub, but it is lower priority than replacing other speakers.

All hooked up..love it.
Congrats!

Killer Sub!...in your new larger space, it might be fine, but unless you can give it the ideal location, the bass might not be as uniform across all seating areas.

That’s great Bruce! How does it compare to the older Velodyne for you?

The old M & K sub: no match.
I can experience things that I've never before.
Haven't had time to do a lot of listening due to work, but best examples so far is 1812 Overture (SACD 5.1) and old Black Sabbath album that is only stereo...major difference.
With respect to 1812 Overture, the cannon shots were so loud and clear that our dogs ran to me and jumped up in my lap immediately. My wife thought at first from the shower that someone shot a gun, until she realized that I was just listening to music!
Also, all of my other speakers are small, so it augments the lower sounds greatly.
Won't be picking up any more new speakers until at least 1 year. Already overspent my budget.

I had those same feelings when I went from a 20 y/o Paradigm 15" sub to the current two HSU subs.

Night and day...enjoy that beast!
