Do Ad Blockers exist for phones? I'm using a free one on my desk computer: " AdBlocker"
No, it's just an obnoxious tapatalk signature setting, forgot to change it when I got my new phone (broke the old perfectly fine one, damnit).

Check the stated spec on Crown XLS vs Crest 2208. what I was referring to. As usual we are usually closer than further apart on use of pro amps in any case...but that 'hifi' comment re consumer vs pro amps (let alone PA amps) got me to nitpicking...as you were.

Sent from my SM-J337V using Tapatalk
I noticed that on the Crest, the power ratings at 4 ohms are much less than at 8 ohms. I assume that it' hasn't got a high current power supply. That doesn't look too hi-fi to me. Actually, a good hi-fi amp should output more power at 4 ohms, at least 50% more, shouldn't it?

I did try and find out about that but got no real solid info (let alone the intention of the manufacturer for such). Still curious but don't think that for the appropriate speakers has much to do with being "hifi" or not :)

Are you sure you were referring to the same Crest amp because the 2208 is an Industrial Amp designed for paging. It also features possibility of operation on a 70 volt output line.

I have a 2208. It is a pro installation amp more than anything. Not paging, full frequency specs like QSC and Crown pro amps. It does have 70V capability from what I remember from the manual. I hooked it up to normal speakers of nominal 6 and 8 ohm and had no issues. I think you're overthinking extreme capabilities of a given amp

The manufacturer indicates that it's an amp specifically designed for paging systems:

We're more debating various professional use amps vs consumer amps rather than the public address system amps he alluded to at one point :). Definitely your old avr is workable, and the multi-ch inputs bypass further processing to make it act more as a pure amp (rather than using a particular input mode)....
I guess if I decide to go this route the question is now do I run the mains with the amp or the satellites.

Not everyone, not me anyway. I thought the Monitor 7 v2 towers and the cc370 center are good speakers for HT.
Yeah well when I bought them 20 tears ago they were good anyway. Honestly speakers are easy. The last thing I will replace if need be. I will definitely buy used when it comes to speakers. Lots of good ol towers and centers always coming up.

Cheers,

Usually a 2ch mode with an avr yields it's best power output, as the power supply has no other duties. Consider that in general it takes a doubling of power to merely gain 3dB spl, too. If your speakers are good, don't expect much difference with an avr beyond it's dsp for various codecs or upmixing....

Looks like I found my amp. I was rooting around the user manual of my dusty avr3802. Looks rediculously easy to use it to power up to 5 speakers if desired and completely bypass any processing. It’s almost like they designed it to be used as a power amp.
I’ve got to say thank you again for all of the insight.
Now what speakers do I power. FR, FL and Centre or just FL and FR?

That will be something only you can decide. Personally, I too have to figure this out, but it's a few months out for me. So I'll be keen to hear how you decide, and if you stick to your first configuration. Whatever you do, Enjoy!

You can try listen to both using your favorite and most familiar with music source in pure direct mode to see if you can hear a difference. If you go with the objective way, you will find that the real world output capability as well as audio specs between the 4400 and the 3802 are very similar. The 4400 weighs less but that's mostly due to the benefits of modern technology, lighter chassis, heat sinks and temperature controlled cooling fans.

Thanks Jim,

I’ll keep everyone updated. With the input I’ve received so far I’m at the
AVR X-4400H for a main receiver-$879.00
AVR 3802 for additional channels( which ones and how many do I amplify, no idea yet)-Free
My collage of in wall speakers from visions - 4 Overhead and 4 Surround -$800.00
My paradigm cc-370 and monitor 7 v2- free
My next sub or pair of subs $??
The 5 miles of Ethernet, speaker wire, HDMI runs in the wall. 300 ish.
? Shelving to hold components-$ meh who cares.

So I should have a full 11.1channel surround system for 2G. Another sub to add yet for the 11.2. For that kind of money how can you do anything but enjoy lol.
Of course now I’m going to be waiting patiently for some perfect speakers for the front and the last sub. I know once your in this game it never ends but getting there is half the fun.

Thanks again everyone that have contributed. It’s been a very enlightening conversation and you saved me 1500.00 bucks.

Cheers,

It’s 7.1.4 or 7.2.4 if you do two subs. Just letting you know the terminology.

Base channels. Number of subs. Ceiling height channels.

Good luck! Go for a 12 in ported sub :)

7.2.4 it will be! 12” ported sub is what I’m looking at. Same as my current one.

Note that on long hdmi runs you can use cat5/6 baluns.
Yeah I looked at it but I ran a couple 35 foot HDMI’s. Hopefully that doesn’t cause me grief although I could change if need be.
