Hello
Looking to replace my overused Onkyo 805 which is cooking my tv stand and need to retire it. I am looking for a great receiver in this price range. I do not care what brand it is. Can I get some opinions on the best receiver in the price range for the money. I am using it to run my complete HT system.
Please no Onkyo products.....
My system.
Klipsch RF 82 floors
Klipsch RC 62 center
Matin Logan grotti sub
PS3 bd player
Panasonic 54 Plasma

How about considerations for
SONY ES
PIONEER ELITE
MARANTZ

The Denon AVR-3310CI and the Pioneer VSX-23TXH are good contenders in that price range. IMO forget the sony es stuff. Dollar for dollar they give more bang for the buck compared to the current Marantz offerings. Upping your budget a bit would give you the option of purchasing a 3 or 5 ch power amp from emotiva and a mid level AVR like the Oknyo 707.

You should be able to get the Marantz SR5004 for under $1k. I paid $900 with tax for mine. I haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, waiting on speakers. Nonetheless, I went with it over the Denon because of the 3 year warranty that comes with the Marantz. Not certain about the Denon 3310, but the 2310 that I was considering doesn't have pre outs. The Marantz 6004 does have bluetooth capability built into it. I can see this becoming standard on receivers in this price range. The 5004 has the capability, but you have to buy the remote seperately.

There was mention earlier this month on this forum that the Pioneer Elite SC-25 is on sale at Best Buy for $999 (in store only) until tomorrow. Might be worth checking out.

Are the current Marantz offerings able to process the HD Audio Codecs and apply Audyssey ?

How about add Emotiva XPA-3 3-ch Amp to power L/C/R, add couple of silent-x fans to cool down "the beast" and give the rest of $1000 to me :D

Moving LCR to Emotive should by itself take huge load of your 805... but If Im not mistaken Klipsch RF/RC are very efficient [93 I think - correct me if I'm wrong]... I doubt you even need to add amp, just make some cooling arrangements.

p.s: My TX-SR805 Rocks !

p.s.s: Make sure your hdmi control is turned-off

I would say Denon/Marantz, Yamaha, or Pioneer Elite.

hdmi turned off....Why? I know a little but not enough to understand a lot of all the HT settings.
The Klipsch are 98db sensitivity..

How could I use the emotiva to power the 805

I have a cooling fan on my currant 805 and it's still hot, hot hot!!!!
enough to brown the underside of my wood cabinet a little. I only have 3 to 4 in clearance on top of it.

use the preouts from the 805 to the emotiva.. emotiva to speakers

Although your speakers are easy to drive a 200 wpc amp will increase your dynamic headroom.

What will this do inturn to the 805? Cut of it's amp and run cooler?
Sorry for my ignorance...

Thanks for the correction about sensitivity.
To use external amp - you'd utilize pre-outs on you 805. [Emotiva doesn't "powers the 805", but taking the load from it - which should make it work cooler)

3-4" clearance is below required specd - Imo you might want to add more fans... Is your 805 is sitting in closed cabinet??

It will take some heat off the unit, if your not running surrounds switch the impedence selector to 4 ohm and that will also help iirc.

Mental note: Switching to 4ohm on 805 will hard limit the amp to 35 Watt/chan

There is NO guarantee here.

Some report that the Onkyo runs HOT regardless!

So you could add the Emotiva amp and the Onkyo could still run as hot as before (or close).

Setting is on 6 ohm right now. There is only a 6 or 4 setting allowed. My speakers are 8 ohm. Never understood which one to put it on.

8 is where you would want it unless you are using it as a pre only.

So to go back to the original question and if I was just to purchase a new receiver to get away from Onkyo...Which is the best quality for around a grand?

Brand wise...Sound wise... I am just curious on opinions.. Or is this like a car question.. They all get you to point b....Just in a different way.
