Ultra HD and Physical Media - A New Optical Format War Brewing?

I have the same sentiments as 3db, but tmurnin is probably right about the market as a whole. Physical media's market share will probably decrease with each new generation (4K will probably be the last). But 4K disks may have a long life as capable broadband infrastructure is being implemented.

Ultra HD and Physical Media - A New Optical Format War Brewing?

I agree with the post arguing against the thought that 4K isn't wanted/needed. When I saw 4K demoed the difference between 4K and 1080P was easily seen. For me this step is tailored made for HT enthusiasts. An 80 inch screen playing a 4K movie complements great sound. I find full, dramatic...

Ultra HD and Physical Media - A New Optical Format War Brewing?

I think you're mostly right. But it will have a place even if its for re-writable media. And if streaming can't handle it (and it can't), digital downloads will still be available, but those are highly copyrighted that moving those from your device to your HT will be a hassle. And that's...

Ultra HD and Physical Media - A New Optical Format War Brewing?

I'll take a war. War in business terms means competition. Competition is a wonderful market pressure to help drive down prices. Now, I won't jump on the bandwagon until a victor is assured, but half the audio/ video-philes may get tuck with a dead technology. And as 4K goes, I believe it...

Yamaha Separates? The CX-A5000 AV Preamp and MX-A5000 11CH Amplifier is here!

OK, complete newbie here. Is having them separate just a way to provide enough power to all channels? Also, where do you find source material that can be played in 11.2?

Cable box not going through AVR

Just set up my HT (yamaha RX-A820). My DVD player is working fine, but my cable box will not go through. It works fine when the HDMI is hooked directly to the TV. Cable box is a Cisco Explorer 8642HDC. I found a thread from 2006 where cable boxes were notorious for not being compatible, but...

Matching appropriate BluRay with my new Home Theater

Not necessarily. I thinking about adding a Roku HD device for streaming unless there is a good reason to have the BD player handle that duty. Is BD old tech and is streaming the way to go? Im afraid that streaming would limit the audio for the sake of bandwidth.

Matching appropriate BluRay with my new Home Theater

I just purchased a Yamaha RX-A820 (great deal on last year's model) and I am pairing it to 5 - 8" Yamaha in ceiling speaker (mid level at best) and a Yamaha 10" front firing sub. Obviously not an audiophile's set-up, but I was just wanting clear sound and an upgrade from TV speakers. That said...
