I must respectfully disagree (in a sense). Yes, painting it black will, contrary to the Stone's song, make the room pretty dismal- but if the room is just for HT use it's well worth it!:D

To reiterate, a square room is about as bad as you're likely to find, but it's not insurmountable. A good package of room treatments can mitigate the problems very effectively. You can ignore the room but doing so will put a hard cap on the quality of sound you're going to get.

A lot is personal preference, too. In my last house I was forced to mount the screen a foot and a half higher than I generally prefer, with the top of the screen very near the ceiling. I always felt it was too high, and I had to crane my neck up almost imperceptibly. But everyone who ever...

I'd budget a bit less for gear and put a bit of that money towards room treatment. A 15 x 15 square room is gonna have some serious problems acoustically. Square is about as bad as it gets.

It's not very powerful but the Pioneer doesn't look too bad. I'd be leery of the other one from the auction site ("The owner assures us it works" doesn't inspire much confidence!:eek:). Otherwise I know a guy selling a couple of Panasonic rec's at AudioCircle, the ones with the digital amps...

Hi, Mulester! I am a member of AK, too, but although I've been registered there since 2002 I have less than 300 posts.:o For me AK is mostly a vintage site, and I have nearly no interest in vintage gear. I like the community a lot but AudioCircle is my main hangout, with AH a close 2nd.

My advice would to be check Audiogon. Used equipment can be a great deal, especially used speakers. A lot of dyed-in-the-wool audiophools change speakers every few months which means there's lots of very gently used stuff out there that could pass for new. Stick to guys with good feedback and...

At this point I think most people would be better served with component. Seems there's still handshake issues with lots of gear. The real purpose of HDMI is more to control DRM than give the consumer a better picture, IMO.

I've read that Wal-Mart is seriously putting the hurt on other retailers of flat screen TVs, basically driving down prices so aggressively that they're a big factor in the woes of guys like CC. Many analysts didn't foresee that the prices would be this low for almost another year.
