Digital Optical & Toslink History Informational

The transmission of signals using a beam of light was a topic for science fiction writers just a few short decades ago. The ability to harness the incredible speeds and data density capabilities of the optical medium was considered a “holy grail” for communications pioneers, who first began...

    A Basket Full of Blues

We were pleased to discover Joe Cornwall of Impact Acoustics (one of our approved cable vendors) is an avid music lover. With that we asked him to write a few reviews of some of his favorite CD’s. Here is a first of many CD reviews to come which Joe refers to as “A Basket Full of Blues”...

    Thin for 12 Gauge???

We did a measurement/review on Sound King 12AWG wire and found it to be very good for the money. This cable did measure to be 12AWG just like the thicker Monster Cable in the review did. The jacket for the Sound King is thinner so it makes the cable appear to be smaller. I suspect the...

    Yamaha RX-Z9 Firmware Upgrade???

The reason why the sub only works when you have "Both" set is likely b/c you selected "large for your main speakers. If you set them to "small" your sub should work for all modes other than "pure direct" when you have sub out set to "SW". Not sure about dual sub settings. IF you select mono...

    Yamaha RX-Z9 Firmware Upgrade???

I don't think this is possible, but you can enter "Stereo" mode and have subwoofer output in 2CH. If you are running digital signals into the Z9 there should be no audible penalty since there is no additional A/D conversion stage. What I meant was that the Z9 only has one storable channel...

    RXV 2400 Presense Speaker Output

Cam; Ideally the "Direct" mode for yamaha is a true bypass with no replication of main channel signal to the sub. While I don't agree with this, many companies are doing this now for the purists at heart. If you plan on connecting mostly digital sources (IE. DVD, CD, HDTV Box, etc) it...

    RXV 2400 Presense Speaker Output

There is no sub out in "direct" mode on the RX-V1400/2400. This was one of my criticisms in my review. As for Presence speakers, you can have either them or back channels but never both (even with an external amp). See our Yamaha FAQ.

    Receiver for Klipsch RF-5s

I don't agree with the notion that you shouldn't use Yamaha/Denon receivers with Klipsch speakers. In fact a friend of mine built a nice system around the Rf5's, matching center and rears with a Yamaha RX-V2500 and it sounded just fine. The nice thing about Klipsch speakers is you don't need a...

    Finally! My HT is done!

Just one more suggestion and please don't take this the wrong way, but if you could possibly integrate some bookshelf speakers for the mains and center into your cabinetry this should yield even better sonic results. I realize aesthetics (spelling?) play a big role in making decisions, but we...

    Finally! My HT is done!

Eric; Great job on the install. I wish my system looked that neat and clean ;) If I may suggest, try stuffing the cabinet where you placed the subwoofer with sound foam or at least dampen the walls within it. Check out our tips for installing a subwoofer into cabinetry.

Outlaw Audio Products - Good Deal?

In that price range I would highly recommend using a receiver as a pre/pro such as a Yammie RX-V1500/2500 or Denon AVR-2805/3805. It is hard to beat the processing power and flexability of receivers.

Outlaw Audio Products - Good Deal?

You may wish to hold off on the Outlaw processor. Its a bit long in the tooth and I believe they will be issuing a replacement product soon. Their amps appear to be a very good value however.

    Audio Interconnects...Help?

Mike; I tested out a Bettercables video cable with the bullet plug several years ago and it did very poorly. It had a very flimsy termination which resulted in excessive chroma delay during my display tests. Unfortunately they didn't take to well to our criticisms and haven't sent new...

THIEL Audio MCS1, SCS3 and SS2 Loudspeaker Review

    Audioquest?

Quality cables do not improve sound. However poor quality cables can cause sound degradation or altered sound from the original signal. Quality cables need not be expensive and price does not always indictate quality, especially surrounding cables.

    Yamaha RX-Z9 with SF Cremonas?

I enjoy some of the DSP modes for concert DVD's and movies. The "Presence" speakers do add another dimension and help to preserve imaging of main speakers. At this point when trying to decide between the Z9 and 5803, I would wait a few more days :) We will be covering alot of new products...
