harman/kardon HK 3490 Stereo Receiver Review

I typically don't test receivers into 4 ohm loads continuously with more than one channel. The 1kHz test is close however. I suspect this receiver would do around 160wpc into 4 ohms continuously with both channels driven based on the other measurements.

harman/kardon HK 3490 Stereo Receiver Review

I suspect the amp section of the Denon and HK are similarly good with a slight edge towards the latter for a bit more power. However, the Denon lacks digital audio inputs and post processing virtual surround options. The Denon does do multi zone and it has a loudness control. It all...

Summit Wireless Technology Delivers Uncompromised Wireless HD Audio

Until we can work out a reliable and efficient way to wirelessly transmit power to a remote location, yes you will need to provide electrical power to each speaker. If we can solve the RF power transmission issue, then we will be one step closer to true wireless speakers and harvesting fusion...

Onkyo TX-NR5008 Networked AV Receiver First Look

I updated to 32 bit, but 32 bit is a bit of a misnomer much like a 10:0000:1 contrast ratio on a TV. Thermal noise / Johnson noise limits actual real world analog noise floors (SNR) to around 20-22 bits of resolution or 120-132 dB (6dB for every bit).

HDMI is Dead. Introducing HDBaseT Networking

Let me play devils advocate for a moment and answer my own question I posted after learning about this technology. If I'm not mistaken Denon already has a uber expensive ethernet cable so high end cable companies can still make a living on dressing up these cables and charging a premium for them :)

    New Axiom VP180

Guys, there are different and valid approaches to loudspeaker design and you should never deal with absolutes and make sweeping statements about any type of design approach. What matters is how a speaker sounds in a real room and not just a theoretically perfect on-axis measurement. I am not...

Embedded iFrame Virus on all Audioholics Forum Pages

I've been running MSE with AVG at the same time on 2 of my machines. My older Desktop seems a bit slugging at times. I traced it and found out Firefox often doesn't close down even though the browser shuts down. When you goto the task manager you can still see firefox.exe running. I will...

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Free AVG together. Do you think just running MSE is enough or is it good to combine the two?

Earthquake hits Canada, is Axiom Audio to Blame?

The EP800 is a relatively new sub featuring 2 12" woofers in a sealed box with the same dimensions as the EP600. They updated the amps on all their subs hence all their speakers now have the V3 designation.

    FCC Confronted with Congressional Regulation

I think that would be devastating to our industry. Consumers don't want cost increases in products which likely means manufacturers would have to offset the tax by reducing product cost to hit a certain price points. There are better things to tax to generate revenues. For example, I say...

Audioholics Remembers Ray Adkins of RLA Hometheater

I have some sad news to report. One of our long time reviewers and personal friend Ray Adkins (screen name: RLA) passed away last month (May, 12th, 2010). Ray was 47 years old and is survived by his loving wife and son. Ray had a strong commitment to family and stood behind his convictions...

    EMP E5Ti or E55TI

Both the E5ti and E55tis are some of the easiest loudspeaker loads to drive. The impedance in bass frequencies is above 8 ohms which makes even modest power receivers have no issues driving the speakers. I do recommend using a powered sub for both music and movies to compliment the bass...

    FCC Confronted with Congressional Regulation

Calling Obama Ubama and relating him to communism is mudslinging as far as I am concerned. During the Bush administration, the FCC created some of the largest fines the industry ever saw attacking free speech on the radio for talk shows like Stern and Bubba. One could have connected the same...

    Speaker efficiency vs sensitivity

Re-read this excerpt: What he is saying is two identical drivers can have exact same efficiency but different sensitivity based on how the sound radiates out of the driver. The only time sensitivity and efficiency can be used interchangeably is when the driver acts as a point source which...
