First Outdoor Ride of the Year

If conditioning is your goal, ride a junker. I have never been in better shape than when I was riding a beat-up Huffy from a garage sale.

Attention span ruined by TV on DVD

I don't watch TV at all. Only DVDs.

    Journey-with the new vocalist

I would rather see them with a singer who has his own sound. Trying to imitate what they were before seems pretty lame.

    Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

It is different than what either of them do on their own. It is a new sound that they have created together.

    great sax

In addition to their own recordings, they were guests on a ton of other people's records, especially in th '70s.

Top 10 Guitar Players all genres

What does this have to do with guitar players?

    Mordaunt Short and Wharfedale

I have taken this advice to heart, and am giving the Mirages another chance. Experimenting further with placement/toe-in has resulted in such improvement that it is tipping the scales in their favor. (In particular, it has tightened up the bass and brought the imaging into sharper focus.) They...

    Soundstage

Def Tech: "Lush, spacious soundstaging. Lifelike depth of field. Pinpoint imaging." Paradigm: "Expanding the sheer size, scale, and dynamics of the acoustic soundstage." Mirage: "Larger, deeper, and more realistic soundstage than any speaker design yet developed." Totem: "Holographic imaging...

One sees the rather silly term "holographic" bandied about quite a lot in both ads and reviews.

Great sounding audio CD's/DVD's to demostrate speakers?

In its day, DSotM was the best recording. It was my reference for years. Modern recording technology has simply left it in the dust, however.

What's next - Wheelchairs for dogs

I don't believe that "trick" is the correct term here, though it is a more polite term.:)

    Mordaunt Short and Wharfedale

I agree in general. This time out, however, the relative lack of clarity, detail, transient response, imaging precision, transparency, and low-level dynamics were all immediately obvious. No further contemplation was required. (Remember, I have spent a lot of time with the Mirages previously, so...

Great sounding audio CD's/DVD's to demostrate speakers?

I have said it before, but it is worth mentioning again: Seven Veils by Robert Rich is the best sounding CD I have ever heard, bar none.

    Soundstage

I disagree. I have heard speakers in the same room (same source) that are similar in most respects but quite different in imaging.

    Premature thread closing

Making comments that require a response is fine. Closing a thread is fine. Making the comments and then closing the thread before I have a chance to supply the required response is unacceptable!

Top 10 Guitar Players all genres

I was watching my live Phish DVD last night, and I have to say Trey Anastasio kills on guitar. (He can't sing, though.:))

What's next - Wheelchairs for dogs

I have seen pictures of similar contraptions from as far back as the 1800s.

First Outdoor Ride of the Year

I ride a hybrid. Mostly I do the 10 mile loop around the lake by my apartment. Riding anywhere other than a bike path in this city would be suicidal. (I miss Eugene, OR in a big way for riding. It had bike lanes and bike paths everywhere, mountains for getting in serious shape, and gorgeous...

    Going to Mars

Mostly, I am disappointed in the human race for the extreme discrepancy between how things could be and how they are. The craphole we live in today is certainly a long way from the bright visions of the 21st century I was presented with as a kid. If we could institute a new social order in...

    Mordaunt Short and Wharfedale

That turned out to be my shortest comparison yet. The Mirages only lasted 10 minutes before I started missing the sound of the CAs. I have also become convinced that, in addition to having to spend a lot more to get better sound, the sound in question is unlikely to be enough better to justify...
