Sorry to see that, man. I hope that your friends recover from the trauma. That had to be terrifying for them. What's more scary is that, at least from my quick read, it seems like it wasn't an accident.

At least from this report it definitely does not seem like an accident. If that's so we might be glad more weren't hurt. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

I do believe its an accident. There's some physics at play that people don't reaalize.

1. The level crossing occurs just as teh transit way begins to straighten out from the curve.
2. The double deckers are extremely heavy. An empty double decker weighs more than an accordian bus fully loaded. They hard to stop
3. They let on way more people than there were seats. People were standing in the aisle ways at top so the bus was loaded to max capacity.
4. The crossing gates lowers when the train is 20 seconds away. Given the proximity of the crossing to the laoction at the end of the curve, I think 20 sec is far too little warning for such heavy vehicles.

A number of physical factors came into play here that caused this accident. I'm not convinced in any way shape or form that this was a deliberate act.

I should read the article more closely. The multiple mentioning of people yelling at the bus driver to stop, but then me not seeing where they said that he tried to, is what formed my suspicion.

Yeah, I miss stuff all of the time, too. :)

I read it again, and was reminded of what I read the first time. The article (and one of the linked articles) quotes people saying that he didn't stop and that the bus didn't appear to slow down. Granted, that doesn't mean that it was intentional. He could have been incapacitated or perhaps the bus had a mechanical failure.

This is horrible horrible thing, it's easy in retrospect to blame someone and maybe it's in our nature to do this, but we should shy away from this.
It is in human's mind that sometimes something just goes wrong, so we need to build infrastructure in a way that these things simply doesn't happen

Maybe there was something wrong with the bus, perhaps it was overloaded, perhaps the drivers are very stressed to keep schedule
One thing we all can learn from this is don't stress, calm down
