Ya just gotta love when ya read about stuff like this. According to te 2010 census, this town has a population of 23,000 and it has 6, yes SIX, "parking enforcement officials". No wonder they're pissed! It's probably their main source of income.

The city of Keene, New Hampshire is suing a group that calls themselves "Robin Hood of Keene," alleging that the merry men have taken away much of the city's revenue by paying the expired parking meters of strangers.'

Funny that it is a new article because that has been around for quite some time. I do kind of the same thing from time to time - top the meter off when I leave.

Meters are there to tell them when to give you a ticket

I never understood the need for meters.
The purpose of meters is to increase revenue, and also to limit the time that people park in specific locations. In some areas, parking is at a premium, and they don't want people parking all day when many more people could use the parking spaces for short stops. It is easier to see that someone has parked too long with meters than without them.

Pretty much. In Japan town here, the limit is 2hrs and costs you about $1.50. If you want to park all day, you can go up the street 2 blocks and pay a whole $2 at a lot. It literally makes no sense to use the meters but there are people parked in those spots constantly simply because they are closer (The whole district is a whole 3 blocks).

Believe it or not in Los Angeles and probably some surrounding communities it's illegal to pay for someone else's meter. It's been that way for years and the courts are fine with it.

Very likely, that is because by feeding the meters for other people, the meter reads for a longer period of time than the legal limit. Often, it is illegal to park in a spot longer than a certain amount of time, such that the maximum time that the meter allows is the legal limit. Therefore, trying to add time to that would be trying to evade the legal limit for the amount of time that one parks in that spot.

Pretty sad for a state who's motto is "Live Free Or Die"

The reason it's illegal to top off the meters of others is that it deprives townships of revenue. They can and do give out tickets for over limit parking on fully paid up meters. It always comes down to money.

Well, by that way of thinking, we're I to drive someone home who has had a bit too much to drink, I'd be depriving the municipality of the chance to pull the guy over and writing up tickets for DUI, speeding, failure to maintain lanes, etc.
