Hello All,

My name is Krishna and I am from India. I have recently registered with your forum and I am sending this message requesting you to give me some guidance regarding speakers selection.

I have a home theater of size 19feet*20feet (Yet to be finished..:)). I am looking for 7.1 Audio with an Amplifier. I have approached few Home theater solutions providing people and each of them are providing different brands speakers as solutions and claiming them to be best. I am confused as to which brand to go with. My budget for speakers is 2,00,000 to 2,50,000 Indian Rupees. (3700$ to 4630$). Please let me know which is the best among the following:

JAMO: C-607 tower speakers (150 Watts @ 6 ohms), a pair of C 60 di polar surrounds(100 Watts @ 6 ohms), one C 60 center with 140 Watts @ 6 Ohms and Jamo A345 70 Watts @ 6 Ohms as Rear surrounds; Amplifier: SR 5006

B&W: B&W 684 Floor standing, B&W HTM 62 center speaker, Wharfedale diamond 10 DFS. surround speakers, Velodyne CHT-12 Q sub woofer; Amplifier: Denon 2312 AV receiver;

DALI IKON: Dali Ikon 6 MK2 Floor standing, Dali Ikon Vokal 2 MK2 center speaker, Wharfedale diamond 10 DFS. surround speakers, Velodyne CHT-12 Q sub woofer; Amplifier: Denon 2312 AV receiver;

Wharfedale Diamond 10.7 Fllor satnding, Wharfedale Diamond 10.CS center speaker,Wharfedale diamond 10 DFS. surround speakers, Velodyne CHT-12 Q sub woofer; Amplifier: Denon AVR 1912 Receiver.

Monitor Audio:Monitor Audio BX6(L,R) Monitor Audio BX center( C );Monitor Audio BXFX(surround); Monitor Audio BXW 10 (Subwoofer); Denon 2113 AV receiver

Monitor Audio 2nd option: MonitorAudioRX6(L,R); Monitor Audio RXcenter(C ); Monitor Audio BXFX(surround); Monitor Audio RXW 12(Sub woofer)

Also, please help me deciding between Pioneer BDP-440 Blu Ray disc player and Sony BD S-490 Blue ray player.

Thanks in advance!
Krishna

Is there any chance your dealers would like you demo the speakers in your room first so you can hear out they sound? At least maybe in 2 channel mode?
Your room and layout will have a big impact on the sound.

But if I had to choose from the setups you have I would with Wharfedale setup, as all your speakers are from the same manufacturer and will have the best bet on having similar tonal qualities coming through together.
You don't necessarily have to buy all your speakers from the same manufacturer. But it helps to have all of your speakers sound the same, or close to the same when putting them together in a multi-channel setup.

As far as the blu-ray player I would splurge a bit more and get an Oppo player. You're spending some decent money on speakers why necessarily get a budget blu-ray player? Also, what kind of display are you looking to run?

Hello mpompey,
Thanks for your reply. I have an option hearing their demo, but not it is not possible at my home. I would have to go to their shop for the demo. My problem is, when I am going through the demo, I am finding all of them to be good. As I am beginner in this field I am not able to make out much difference. Hope you understand my problem..:)
You were suggesting me to go with Wharfedale option as all speakers are of same company. But Jamo and Monitor Audio options mentioned above, also have all speakers of same company. How about those two brands. Please let me know if you have idea about those brands(Jamo and Monitor Audio). Also let me know which is better amplifier, when it comes to Marantz and Denon AV receiver.
As far as Blu ray player is concerned, thanks for your suggestion. I would go with Oppo player. I found it good when compared to Pioneer and Sony.

Thanks,
Krishna

You will find very few people that will tell you there is an audible difference between those brands of receivers. It's the extras you have to choose from.

i think you answered your own question if they all sound the same, go with the cheaper one.

Love my Wharfedales, hated my velodyne so much, I bought a matching pair of SVS PB-1000, I doubt that they are available in India. Do yourself a favour and get the biggest centre channel available, my wharfedale centre is one model above the the rest of the wharfies. The sound difference is quit noticable with the larger Diamond 9 CM, as opposed to the CS. Recall that most movies have 65-85% of audio coming out of the centre.

Your equipment choices are all excellant, just depends on what sounds best, like another poster mentioned, if it all sounds the same, just go with the cheapest

Your room...is it like the typical Indian house? Marble floors, 16 feet high walls, with brick & plaster construction, and lots of windows? Do yourself a huge favour, and start reading up on acoustic treatments. THis is one aspect of home audio that gets talked about the least but has the greatest effect on your romm acoustics. The $200 USD I spent on room treatments has eliminated (saved me) the need for me to spend $8,000 USD on a whole new kit.

Good Luck!

Hi, and welcome:)

I would not rush your decision, not with speakers. You are right about your listening experience. Not easy to recall the differences when you are new but mostly as the rooms are different in each store and the time that passes by between listening is just way too long.
So, as suggested, I would listen to them a bit more and then it is a subjective choice of preference for you. Cost is a factor, of course. So is the looks, especially is a spouse has anything to say about the speakers in the room;)

Hello Bobnegi,

Thanks for your reply. I will listen to Wharfedales once again. As far acoustics are concerned, special care was taken with my home theater room. Walls are paneled with wood with acoustic material beneath them. Ceiling is also covered with acoustic material.
I have one more doubt. I am planning to mix B&W (Front two - 683, Center and Sub woofer) with Wharfedale (4 surrounds). Is this a good idea?

Thanks,
Krishna

Hi Krishna,

Im from India too and had auditioned a lot of Speakers for my Home Theater. I had auditioned Polk, KEF, Klipsch, Jamo, Wharfedale, Monitors and a few more. But its your own choice of hearing that matters. Jamo and KEF were my shortlisted choices. Klipsch, Polks and a few others gave me ear fatigue after listening 2 songs, Movies scenes.

Jamo (Concert Series) had a good depth, was crisp, and was smooth. Listened to 5 songs, 3-4 Movies scenes and I was ready to hear more. A lot was lacking in their Studio Series.
Finally I bought the Jamo Concert Series C607 Fronts, C60 Center, C60 Surrounds, Sub 660. Added 2 Aesthtic Series A345 for the Front High Surrounds. Sounding great and can listen for more than 2+ hours continuously powered By Onkyo TX NR-717.

You should buy those speakers that you think sounds perfect. I took almost 3 months, visiting the Audio Shops repeatedly before making the choice.

So all the best. Good Luck.

Hello All,

Thanks to everyone for your replies. After listening to B&W 684 series and Monitor Audio RX6, I felt that B&W 684 lacks clarity in amplifying minute sounds. Where as MA was far better. So I am thinking to buy MA RX6. But due to budget constraints I am planning to mix RX with BX in the following way:
MonitorAudioRX6(L,R)
Monitor Audio RXcenter(C )
Monitor Audio BXFX(surround)
Marantz5007Avreceiver
Velodyne CHT-12Q Subwoofer

As Monitor Audio RXW 12 (Sub woofer) is expensive I am planning to go for Velodyne CHT-12Q Sub woofer. And I am also willing go for bronze series surrounds instead of the RX series surrounds. Will this combination have any major impact on the sound that I experienced in audition room? How important is the sub woofer in Home Theater. Please let me know.
