I watched Helboy 2 last Fridy night on standard DVD and this is one of those rare occasions where I thought the sequel is better thna the original. The characters seemed to be fleshed out a little more in this one. The humour is the same off the cough as the first but there's more of it.

The effects were good and the soundtrack was OK I think. I qualify the "OK" because I was listening to it at night using standard compression ( I also have a max compression on my receiver as well) and I now it limits the bass impact. The surrounds as far as I rememeber were there but it didn't leave me enveloped with sound say like "Master & Commander" or U571.

Its a light hearted movie made to entertain and in that respect it succeeded. :)

There's already a thread on this movie. I can't possibly see how you can say this was better than the first?? I felt I wasted my money seeing it in the theater.

Sorry John, but I gotta agree with 3db on this one. I actually liked this one better than the first. It didn't bother me that there wasn't any character development. I really dug the elf characters.

I liked the villian also. The cinematography was good as well, but the story was just total crap IMO.

I agree I loved it. It was fun and that's was what it was meant to be. I thought the first one was good not great(saw it at the theater), but this one was better. The PQ/SQ is reference on BD for sure.

No way, the first one was leaps and bounds better in terms of story. This one was a cash in on the success of the first one, which disappoints me because he is one of my favorite directors.

If you want to see some good DelToro work watch Pan's Labyrinth or Cronos.

I disagree I liked II better. Oh I see Hellboy Is on Netflix will check it out again If 5.1. Didn't like Pan's when I saw it In the theater. I may give it a second chance one day. Have not seen Cronos and The Devil's Backbone, but It's been on my list to get though. The Orphanage was pretty good, but not great.

Lots of people disagree with me on that one, but looking at the pro reviews, the two movies were rated about the same. I might give 2 another shot also since the chick hasn't seen it and she liked the first one. The Extended edition of HB1 on was better than in the theater. Neither of them are shining achievements of Del Toro :) Both have great visuals and audio too. There's a rumor he is planning #3 :D

What's not to like about Pan's? It was a solid movie, if a bit excessively violent; an odd mix of fantasy and horror, but I felt very well done - I saw it in theaters. I thought The Orphanage was quite good, but it was not directed by Del Toro, only produced.

Huh. Maybe I should give HB2 another try, since some of you liked it better than the first one. I liked the first one, but thought that the second one sucked. I honestly can't remember if I finished it, or how far I got into it. I just didn't like it. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance.

Nah, I am pretty sure your first instinct was right. "Sucked" might be a bit excessive, but I liked the first one better too. I saw it in the theater opening night, so isn't like I could just turn it off :) I am willing to give it another shot too though.

*edit - Visually the second one was better looking, and I did like the use of the choreography and dude from Blade2 for the prince - that stuff was very well done. The rest of it though just seemed like they had to find something to fill in the spots between the good scenes. The first one gave a lot better sense of the characters, all of them not just a few. Great visuals do not always add up to a great movie: aka Transformers.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but...ummm, uhhh...

Well, that, and I happen to really like Transformers. :D
2 minutes of her didn't make up for the rest of the movie :D PS: I liked her a lot better in Jennifer's Body:eek: If you gave me a choice between Transformers and this one, I'd rather watch Hellboy2

I mentioned that, but it still has not been confirmed. My guess is it will; just a matter of when he gets around to it.

[h=1]Guillermo Del Toro Says It's Basically A Wrap For The ‘Hellboy’ Series[/h] News by Edward Davis

Last we heard, actor Ron Perlman was looking to complete the “Hellboy” series as a trilogy before finally saying goodbye. “I’d like to finish it. I’d like for there to be a third film because the first two films were set up for this huge resolve and he [and director Guillermo Del Toro] already understands what that resolve will look like," the actor said a few month ago.
Pearlman said that while del Toro never did deliver the “nuts and bolts” of the story, he did give him the “broad strokes sketch” of what the third film would look like describing it as “epic.” This certainly stoked the flames of many fans out there hoping to see their red demon hero on the big screen. But in a recent Reddit AMA, de Toro seemingly does it once a month, the always chatty, always candid filmmaker cast what feels like final doubts on a third film.
“It’s very unlikely it’ll happen because you need things to converge so strongly. [Producer] Larry Gordon, Universal, the rights, Ron [Perlman’s] and mine’s availability, [comic creator] Mike [Mingola’s] blessing; we have pieces of that, but we don’t have all of that. You need so many things to confluence and then you need about $150 million,” del Toro wrote during the chat.
The filmmaker even revealed some of the narrative elements too. "The idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse,” he said. “And having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
del Toro's right about the math. It's not on his side. The first "Hellboy" film didn't even crack $60 million domestically and the sequel, 'The Golden Army' didn't go higher than $75 million. And there wasn’t much of an international appetite for the film either. In 2004, the original film failed to even crack the $100 million mark worldwide, the second faired a little bit better at $160 million, but these are the numbers studios are aiming for with domestic releases, not global ones. I certainly wouldn’t bet a third film taking place, especially when del Toro’s got a “Pacific Rim” world to take forward into the future.

That's dissappointing, I really like the series and was looking forward to a conclusion to it. Hopefully something can get worked out, but based on the numbers quoted, it doesn't look too promising.
