Hello folks, it sure has been a while. Hope everyone is fine. As of late, I have been reading about the Pioneer speakers designed by Andrew Jones. That being said, I got the chance to audition them at my local BB store yesterday. I must say, that I was very impressed. For the money, I have NOT heard a better set of speakers. I was most impressed with the SP-FS52 towers. Very nice sound to me. The SP-C22 center channel and the SP-BS22 bookshelves were also quite impressive. Especially, using a 4" mid driver. Needless to say, I brought them all home. I now have a 5.0 set-up for the time being.

As some of you know, almost 4-years ago I moved into a small apartment and merely did away with all of my HT set-up. My living-room is NOT real big AND the walls are quite thin. My goal is to ascertain a decent HT on a very limited budget. As such, this is why I chose the Pioneer speakers designed by Andrew Jones. For now, I am borrowing an Integra 5.5 receiver that is more or less outdated. There is no hdmi switching or processing the newer codecs. I can, however, get DD via optical inputs on the Integra which for the time being will be fine. I can also purchase the Integra on the cheap. The problem is I have no calibration mic. Not sure what to do about that. Maybe contact Onkyo and see if they can sell me one they may have laying around. I will worry about that later once everything is set up. Due to my health, that may be a little while.

I also own a Sony BDP-S590 blu-ray player. Hopefully, I will be streaming with it soon. Just love watching blu-ray/dvd movies and listening to my cds. Currently, I own a 32" Insignia LED TV that is getting the job done because my living-room area is not very big. Well, at least it is good enough for me. There are plans to get a bigger tv AND a small powered sub. However, it will be a good while before any of that happens.

So, am I headed in the right direction? I know I need a receiver that is more up to date. But, right now I don't have the budget to do so. I have been looking at the Yamaha RX-V673. Chances are, if I do upgrade it will be something like the 673. I got the Pioneer towers for $160 plus tax. The center was only $80 and the bookshelves were $90 respectively. I thought it was too good of a deal to pass and I pounced on it. Anyone here get them any cheaper? The Pioneer 8" sub looks quite tempting. It is affordable and just might fit the bill for my needs. The towers will suffice for music listening, but I do need a small sub for some LFE when watching movies. The Hsu 8" sub is an over achiever, but it is also over $300 shipped. Just totally out of my price range right now. Any other suggestions? Thanks for taking the time and reading my post. Feel free to chime in as I am can always use some helpful advice. It feels good to be back!

Cheers,

Phil

You seem to know what you are doing. If money is tight be sure to comb the used market as you have been. I doubt the calibration mic is worth the cost.

I think a sub comes before a receiver upgrade. Welcome back!

Seems like a strong start to me.

The problem is I have no calibration mic. Not sure what to do about that. Maybe contact Onkyo and see if they can sell me one they may have laying around.
That's probably the only option; the mic itself is calibrated for use with the receiver, so you can't readily substitute one for another. Of course, it wouldn't be on my list of things to worry about. Probably better to save your shekels for a new receiver in the future than blow anything on the current one.

The towers will suffice for music listening, but I do need a small sub for some LFE when watching movies. The Hsu 8" sub is an over achiever, but it is also over $300 shipped. Just totally out of my price range right now. Any other suggestions?
I'd toss Dayton into the mix as an option:
Dayton Audio SUB-1200 12" 120 Watt Powered Subwoofer 300-629

Of course, patience on the used market could yield a sweet deal.

Hey, Phil! Good to hear from you. Good luck scoring a deal on a sub and rec'r. I know you know your way around buying gear. Those speakers you got are the ones to get. Lots of buzz about them. Real good to see your name on the boards again. :)

Hey look everyone it's Phil!:D

Hi Buddy,

Looks like a good start to me. An apartment with thin walls and a small room = don't need much power and probably wont get full use of a sub. If you want the best sound possible I'd go with the smallest AVR that has the current codecs and some room correction also. Maybe some thing like this Refurb... DENON AVR-1613 5.1ch Networking Receiver w/AirPlay 3D ready | Accessories4less

Also, do you own a good set of headphones? $50-$100 gets some pretty good sound!

Hope your feeling better soon Phil,
Doug

Welcome back.
I'd be willing to ship you my Denon Audyssey calibration mic on a temporary basis. I'm not sure if it would be properly used with an Onkyo or not.

Good health to you!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am fine. Just dealing with the trials and tribulations of life. The old cliche "It is what it is" really rings loud and clear around my part of the woods so to speak. Just feels good to be back. I guess the HT bug has bitten me again!

Thanks Isi. I will keep this in mind. The problem not having a mic is setting all of the speakers up manually. I have done this before with my rat shack spl meter. But, I may not have a remote for the Integra receiver. A close friend of mine loaned it to me for the time being, but he is not sure where the remote is. However, my friend believes he can find it. I also asked him about the mic and he told me he never had one. As far as a sub goes, it can not be too robust because of my living conditions. So, I will not get to play it very loud. The Hus 8" sub would be perfect, but may be a bit too much given that it is an over achiever as it is.

Thanks Steve. i will keep the Dayton in mind. However, it may be a bit big both in terms of size AND performance. There just is not enough room. An 8" sub would be more ideal.

Thanks Alex. The sub and receiver will come in due time. It will be a while because of budget constraints. I will be patient and find the right deal. We all know timing is everything. Hope all is well your way. BTW, heard from Jamie lately? How about Adam?

Hey Doug. No, I don't own headphones but a few people have already mentioned that option to me. Fore the time being, I will have to pass. Not really too fond of them. Oh, I been looking at that Denon for a while now. However, the Yamaha RX-V673 looks better to me. What do you think about the Yammy?

Thanks man. That is very nice of you. Not sure if it will work. I may give ONKYO a call tomorrow and ask. Who knows, it may just work. Hope all is well.

Which one? :D Great to see you posting again, man! I mentioned you in the Boring thread about a week ago when I saw you on here. :) I'm glad that you're back! I hope that you enjoy your new setup. Everybody who's tried those speakers sure seems to like them.

Thanks Adam. Glad to see you and pooch are well. Yeah, I auditioned the Pioneer speakers and decided to bring them home. Quite impressive sounding for the money. What surprised me the most is how well the cabinets passed the "knuckle" test. Very solid cabinets imho. The sound was very good and well balanced. The towers impressed me the most. Very tight and natural sounding to me. Sure, there are better speakers, but for the money I have yet to hear anything better. Keep in mind, that I have owned a full set of the Infinity Primus speakers including the BIG center channel they offer. While the Primus were impressive in their own respect, I believe I prefer the sound of the Pioneer speakers myself. At least, these are my initial thoughts. Andrew Jones is a genius in my book!

I heard those two moved in together and plan to adopt a child. NTTAWWT. :D

KEW owned both at the same time and agrees with you. I've never heard them myself but Kurt's word carries some weight regarding sound so congratulations on choosing wisely.

Buried in this thread is an account of the comparison I did of your 360s that I modified and Kurt's stock version of the same. There's also some pic's of your old Infinities in their new home.

I never got to try it out but I always had the sneaking suspicion that the smaller 2 way center would have done a better job than the bigger 3 way. BTW, your smaller 2 way and Kurt's Primus 362s are shacking up in my friend Eddie's system. It's like a speaker soap opera.
