Your Salks look great! So you have a red room? Looks very nice. I want a red room. :D

It's just a red wall ... that turns mostly brown in the absence of direct light. Maybe that's just how color and light work together but noticing stuff like that is new to me. Anyway it was a way to get my display wall dark. Here's the front stage.

EDIT: I just now looked through this thread ... I probably looked before but then it was just ramblings about random speakers. I saw that Nuance has the same speakers just not as pretty as mine. :) Well, I guess I'll be walking around tomorrow with my head just a little higher. ;)

I just read through this whole thread. I remember reading parts of it before. What an epic! I didn't realize that the ST was 4 Ohm. Kurt's amp is going in sooner than I thought but my old Onkyo isn't having any trouble making me happy and my neighbors less so. I saw somebody mention Salk surrounds. That got me thinking about building some DM designed bookshelves but my last foray into DIY still stings. Rich, what are you doing with your summer? :D

If I ever get my custom house & HT room, I want it red like that. Looks really cool. It seems to bring out the good looks of your Salk speakers too. Interesting how the room or wall color can enhance the aesthetic of the speakers too. I've always had boring white walls so I never thought about that. Makes me want to own a Salk....if I had red walls

I'm delighted to have something that you admire. The trick with that red is it's lack of brightness in the absence of light. Oh, it's also flat as opposed to egg-shell. It leans way toward brown. In case you want to check it out it is 'Bolero SW 7600' from Sherwin Williams.

Here's a pic that is more representative of how that accent wall fits in the room. It's a smallish place and the room is not a dedicated theater. I couldn't in good conscience turn our living room into a super dark single purpose theater.

Now, here's the flush mounted port:

... no doubt adk will be by and will have noticed the wire pants.
Oh yeah, I put these on special for you, Buddy. Tight, tight, tight ... :D

When I was down in Maryland with Rich, Kurt and Dennis, they used Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man to show off their various speaker delights. I happen to have a Telarc recording of that and just played it. I must say the cable pants gave the music a smooth shiny presentation. Seriously, this is very dynamic piece. Granted when I heard it at Swerd's it was louder because I figure I'm only interested in making so much of a nuisance of myself to my neighbors. At Dennis' with Kurt's soon to be Phil3s the bass shook the floor ... effortlessly. The STs fit a different niche. Namely they are much smaller and they sound wonderful backed up very close to a wall.

I don't really know how to describe it but the horns in that piece have this floating tonal quality that must be some sort of interaction between the instrument and the room. It almost loops back into itself with pitch and amplitude ... like a wave, a returning swell of sound. Maybe it's the musician doing that on purpose because it seems so perfectly in time. I don't know. I'm not at all qualified to speak on music never mind performances but I can speak on loudness. With a relatively low powered rec'r I got out of these STs some very serious sound. I'm sure there's more where that came from but again, the neighbors. If I owned a house I'd be deaf. I turned it down after a bit and then another piece with timpani drums made me go back and turn it down again.

The best that can be said about the bass output of the STs in comparison to the Phil3s is that they don't over reach. I mean there is plenty of bass there but none of it extends beyond their ability to reproduce with fidelity ... it's very balanced and a show of knowing when to say when in the design phase.

I almost got mixed up in the $2k-$3k for speakers thread but saw that they had a good thing going audition wise and covered some wide ground. For my particular circumstances these are a perfect fit due to firstly their SQ excellence and secondly their placement flexibility. Oh yeah, their looks ... very important ... for the men with women. :D

I must say, I crack myself up. Now, it's time for some trim. :)

Thanks. I have been taking notes from various members over the years. I will put that paint down on my Custom HT Notes on my Google Drive. :D

And also I don't think you need $3K or even $30K speakers to sound great. I am confident your Salk sound as great as any speakers in terms of midrange & treble.

True ... and the bass doesn't have to come from them either. That room accommodates a couple of pee-pee subs behind the couch where they are not seen. I know TLS has provided an alignment for the small 8W7 JL Audio sub and in a pinch I could grind out a couple of those if only to spray them with a rattle can and hide them away in those corners. It would sound like you were listening to a concert from the inside of one of those drums but that's a different matter altogether.

Alex, your room looks really nice! Congrats on your SongTower's. We now own the same speakers! :D Although, SS8's are in my future. Seeing your red room and ADTG's red Phil's, I'm wondering if I should get red SS8's. I bet the wife would shoot me! :D

When I first got my STs, I was still using my old Denon AVR along with the 2-channel amp you saw last month. That Denon was rated at 70 wpc when 2 channels were operating. Although I intended to drive the STs with the more powerful separate amp, I did try them with the Denon alone for about 15 minutes or so. It was fine.

I saw somebody mention Salk surrounds. That got me thinking about building some DM designed bookshelves but my last foray into DIY still stings. Rich, what are you doing with your summer? :D
I'm glad you added the big green grin face, or I would change my email address and phone number .

What do you now have for rear channel speakers? A smaller Infinity?

Personally, I think Salk surrounds (or the similar CAOW1 or MB27) are way too good for rear channel speakers in 5.1 surround sound system. People certainly do have them, and Jim Salk is certainly glad to sell them, but I'd rather spend my money on something else.

You saw the NHT SuperZeros that I have for rear channel speakers. I think they're fine. Their neutral sound balance blends well with the Salks.

Some time in the last year, Dennis Murphy bought a pair of the present day version, the NHT SuperZero 2.0, tried them as rear channel speakers with his Phils, and he thinks they do fine for that. His comment is buried somewhere in the very long Phil thread.

You can't beat their price of $99 each. They're small enough to allow wall or ceiling mounting. NHT also sells some mounting hardware they recommend, the Omnimount 10. If you search, you might be able to find them somewhere else for a better price.

Amazing how much better it sounds with a tight pair of pants.

I'm very proud of your wiring so far. Don't be slacking when you get the gear connected. I want nice pics and all wires tied up clean.

How is the trim coming?

No fair! You pulled out the high polished amo !!! :) That's pretty hot. I had not noticed any pic's showing that before. It's a good look. I haven't owned a ton of speakers like many on here so in no uncertain terms this move leap frogged me in terms of performance and looks like an audio wormhole ... bam ... different dimension.

Red's a good color ... go for it on the SS8s. What happens to your STs after? Are there replacement drivers available for these? Namely the tweeter. I imagine the 5" mids are the same as the current models.

How's the trim coming? Like you would expect from a guy on a computer.

I'm kind of done in the EC wire wise, more or less.

I am happy you're liking your ST RT's!

I guess I'll sell the SongTower's when I buy the SS8's. I could try to convince the wife to let me put them in the living room, but that would be a tough uphill battle. There are plenty of replacement drivers for them, though. The mids are a little different now than what is in my speaker, seeing as mine was the first SongTower with ribbon tweeter ever, but they are identical in sonics from what I've read. Truth be told, I'm not unhappy at all with my SongTower's, but I've not forgotten the sound that the SS8's produce, and it is something I cannot get out of my head. Perhaps it would have been best if I had never heard them. :)

I request more pictures of your room once you get everything set back up again. :D

Yeah--like you can buy my single NHT for $50. Hardly used--I just wanted to test it out.

I hooked my newly acquired SongTowers up yesterday. They have the discontinued LCY ribbons. I'm in the middle of redoing the living room so I had my couch pushed way toward the front of the room and was able to move about the room freely as I listened to first Adele and later to Chris Isaac.
I have to say that I'm tempted frequently to stop the DIY nonsense and save up for some Salks. They are amazing speakers. On the sub end you might consider those small SVS subs they have now. I understand DIY is fun, but it really doesn't save you money once you factor in labor.

I really am tempted, but I've gone this far with my speakers and I intend to finish them even if it's 4 years after this project started.

Congrats on the beautiful new speakers.

There's just something about red. Women in Red dresses........Little Red Corvette.....Red Walls.....Shiny Red Speakers. :D

I really don't care about purses, but even when I see a big shiny red purse, I have to look at it.

I bet my shiny piano red Phil3 would look great in a red room.

No question a shiny red SS8 would look fantastic in a red room.

Well ... how much? Do you have boxes? When? Just curious. Does anyone know what Audiogon says about their value? I take it these are called Salk SongTower QWT RT? I'll do a search of my own I guess.

What am I, an open book? Primus 150 surrounds and OWS1s rears. Yep had to do it, 7.2. The rears lean up on the Grammas pointed towaerd the money seat.

TLS disagrees ... I'm pretty sure about that but this hobby is about excess and overkill anyway. I find it crazy that a doable good looking MB-27 is $500.

You saw the NHT SuperZeros that I have for rear channel speakers. I think they're fine.
I too have something that is fine/adequate/etc. How much more were the parts for a CAOW1? Even better, track down some unwanted surrounds with the medium curly cherry and LCY ribbons ... for an outrageous deal of course.

Those will do. Get the trim done already, and start listening.

towaerd  Is bryceo your editor now?

A pair of Seas CA15RLYs are $120 (marked down from the usual $158) and Hiquophon OW1s are now $220/pair. The MB27 drivers are now Seas 27TFFC $92/pair, and the M-130 woofers are $54/pair. That's $194 more for the CAOW1 drivers. And that's with a $38 lower special price, normally it would be $232 more. Is that more than a pair of Primus 150s?
